AnyDesk 2.9.5, install this remote desktop software on Ubuntu 18.04

about Anydesk

In the next article we are going to take a look at AnyDesk. This is a program of remote desktop software developed by AnyDesk Software GmbH. It offers users two-way remote access between personal computers. We can find it available for all common operating systems. This software has been in active development since 2012.

AnyDesk is one of the most comfortable remote desktop applications in the world. It will allow us to access all our programs, documents and files from anywhere, without having to entrust our data to a cloud service. We can say that is an alternative to TeamViewer and that we will have available for free.

The creators of this application offer us users a free trial so that we can learn about AnyDesk and many of its features. As advertised on their website, they will not ask us for personal data. This application can be used for free with many of its features available, although not all. If more additional features are needed, a license can always be purchased.

Similar to other remote desktop programs, such as TeamViewer and Remote Utilities, AnyDesk uses an ID number to facilitate connection establishment. If you install AnyDesk instead of just running it, it will offer us the possibility of create a custom alias to share with other users. This is much easier to remember than a random string of numbers.

AnyDesk general features

Anydesk configuration

  • When both the host and client machines are running AnyDesk, they can share the AnyDesk address between them to initiate the connection. The team that shares its address will be remotely controlled.
  • We will have the possibility of set a password to enable unattended access. We can also define the permissions that remote users receive when they connect with our team. These will allow them to see the monitor, listen to the sound of the equipment, control the keyboard and mouse, and access the clipboard, among others.
  • Two-way remote access between Windows, macOS, Gnu / Linux and FreeBSD
  • One-way access from mobile platforms Android and iOS2
  • Secure protocol TLS-1.2 3
  • File Transfer
  • Cat client to client
  • Integration of clipboard
  • Session log
  • Alias custom client

These are just some of the Anydesk features. To know all of them in detail that this program can offer, it is best to visit the official project page.

AnyDesk Installation

Let's start the process by updating the system repository by typing in the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T):

sudo apt-get update

Now let's get the latest version of the desktop from your Official site. We can also use the wget command to get the latest version at the time I'm writing this article:

wget https://download.anydesk.com/linux/anydesk_2.9.5-1_amd64.deb

After the download is complete, we can already install it using dpkg. In the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) you just have to type:

sudo dpkg -i anydesk_2.9.5-1_amd64.deb

The terminal will return us that dependencies have failed. To solve this, in the same terminal we write:

sudo apt install -f

We could avoid this problem with dependencies using gdebi to install the .deb package.

Anydesk launcher on Ubuntu 18.04

To open the AnyDesk application, we will only have to go to the Ubuntu menu and type Anydesk. In the menu when the icon appears, we will click on it to open the program.

New Anydesk session

The application will now start showing us our address followed by an @ad. In order for another Anydek user to connect to our team, we will have to provide them with this address. In case we want to connect our equipment to that of another user, we must write the address of that other user's equipment in the box "another job".

This is just a basic explanation of how to use this program. With what can be read here, we can install Anydesk 2.9.5 on Ubuntu 18.04 without any problem.

Uninstall Anydesk

To remove this program from our Ubuntu system, we will only have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T). In it we will write:

sudo apt remove anydesk && sudo apt autoremove && sudo apt purge anydesk
