Audacious 4.0 is now available and these are its news

After more than a year of the release of the latest stable version, the launch of the new version and branch of the popular music player Audacious 4.0 which is a lightweight music player, derived from the Beep Media Player project (BMP), which is a fork of the classic XMMS player.

The player supports the most popular audio formats, including but not limited to: MP3, AAC, WMA v1-2, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, various plug-in formats, console / chip formats, Audio CD, FLAC, and Ogg Vorbis.

Has a compact, foldable, mobile playlist editor which allows you to view, sort, shuffle, load and save your music playlists. Content can be dragged directly into the playlist, making it quick and easy to add media from different sources.

The built-in equalizer is also foldable and mobile. Equalizer presets can be saved and loaded, and set to load presets automatically based on the file being played.

What's new in Audacious 4.0?

With the release of this new version the developers report that the default transition to an interface based on Qt 5, since the GTK2-based interface is no longer developed, but it is left as an option that can be activated during compilation (only applicable for those who compile the source code).

In general, both options are similar in the organization of work, but the Qt interface implements some additional features, such as a simpler browsing and sorting mode for viewing the playlist.

In a Qt-based interface similar to WinampNot all functionality is ready yet, so users of this version of the interface may want to continue using the GTK2-based interface.

Regarding the changes that are presented, we can find that added support for sorting a list Of reproduction clicking on column headings, as well as the ability to rearrange the playlist columns by dragging them with the mouse.

It is also mentioned that the list sort mode playback with displaying directories after files.

Besides that added volume and size settings common to the entire application.

Another change that stands out in this new version is the implementation of an option to hide tabs with a playlist.

Of the other changes that are mentioned:

  • Additional MPRIS calls were implemented for compatibility in KDE 5.16+.
  • Added plugin with OpenMPT based crawler.
  • Added a new VU Meter display plugin.
  • Added option to access the network through SOCKS proxy servers.
  • Commands have been added to switch to the next and previous album.
  • The tag editor has the ability to edit multiple files at once.
  • Added window with EQ presets.
  • The Lyrics plugin adds the ability to save and download lyrics from a local drive.
  • For Qt, MIDI, Blur Scope and Spectrum Analyzer are ported.
  • Expanded output plug-in capabilities through the JACK sound system.
  • Added option to loop PSF files.

How to install Audacious 4.0 on Ubuntu and derivatives?

This release comes with two interfaces GTK + -based and Qt-based user settings. The builds offered are prepared for various Linux distributions and for Windows.

Even though at the moment packages have not been updated in Ubuntu repositories nor in the PPA maintained by Web Upd8.

So at this time (of writing the article) only source code available of the new version for compilation. The link is this.
