If you are familiar with word processing tools, you will be able to create an eye-catching resume spending time with it, depending on your skills. However, there is a command line utility called "best-resume-ever" to make this job much faster and easier. You will not need to dedicate hours to design the curriculum vitae nor will you need the help of professional experts to do it.

Using this tool, anyone can create eye-catching resumes from the command line on Gnu / Linux in a matter of minutes. This tool offers us by default some ready-made templates, by default it only offers seven, but we can create our own. Thanks to them, all we will have to do is modify the details of these to include your own, allowing us to obtain our curriculum in a few minutes. With this tool we will have a preview of the design before creating the final version and export it to pdf.

Best resume ever installation

First of all, it must be said that this tool can be used by «NodeJS«, Since we will need«NPM»To install it. For install NodeJS and NPMIf you don't have them installed yet, all you have to do is follow the article that in his day I wrote in this same blog.

After this, we will have to install git, which is available in the default repositories. Thanks to this we can install it using the package manager. We will only have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write in it:

sudo apt install git

Once Npm and Git are installed on our computer, we will use git to clone the repository. We will do this by typing the following command in the terminal:

git clone https://github.com/salomonelli/best-resume-ever.git

This command will clone the contents of the Best-resume-ever tool into a folder called "best-resume-ever" in the current working directory. To work with this tool, we will have to go into the folder:

cd best-resume-ever

Once in it, we will execute the following command to install it:

npm install

Create resumes

Once the installation is finished, we will go to the resume folder what is inside the best-resume-ever directory. Open the data.yml file using any editor to update or change the data that you are interested in appearing on your resume:

Save and close the file. Later, within the same folder we can replace the image with the photo with each other's. If we want to change the images of the menu in which we will choose the template to use, we can do so by searching for the files to modify within the src / assets directory.

Resume preview

To preview the resume, run the following command in the terminal:

npm run dev

The preview will automatically open in your default web browser. In case it does not open automatically we will only have to write in the address bar of our browser the following url:

http://localhost:8080

As can be seen from the screenshot above, there are seven different designs by default. We will only have to click on any of them to see how our curriculum will look applying the selected template. If you are not satisfied with the default templates and can't find anything you like, you can always design your own according to your needs. To do this, you will only have to on request this page to design new templates and follow the steps indicated therein.

Once you are satisfied with the result, press CTRL + C in the terminal to close the preview.

Export resumes

When you finish with the design and the result is what you are looking for, run the following command. With him will export the curriculum in pdf format:

npm run export

All resumes they will be exported to the / pdf folder within the best-resume-ever directory.
