Board games for Linux

We discuss board games for Linux

When it comes to having fun with the computer, not everything has to be about killing Martians and leaving the joystick or mouse begging for mercy. TWe can also measure ourselves against other players using our heads. That's why we recommend some board games for Linux.

The titles we recommend can be found in the repositories or in the Flatpak and Snap stores.

What are board games

Board games are characterized by using a surface divided into parts identified by squares, paths, symbols or regions that act as a support for the game. Players move through the different parts using tokens, cards or dice according to a series of rules that define the actions and consequences. These rules also determine who the winner is and how and when the game ends.

Chess

Perhaps the best known of the board games and the one that has been most ported to computers. It is a strategy game between two opponents who have 16 pieces each. These pieces move on a 64-square grid board in which black and white colors alternate. The pieces have different hierarchies and allowed movements.

The winner is whoever manages to check the opposing king, that is, corner him with some of his pieces in such a way that he cannot escape or defend himself.

Gnome Chess

As its name suggests, it is the GNOME project's chess program. You can play against the computer (3 levels of difficulty) or against another human opponent. It can work with different game engines installed separately.

It is in the repositories and on Flathub

Knights

The KDE project also has its chess game which can be found in the repositories or in the store Flatub. Their characteristics are:

  • Game between two human players
  • I play against other chess software that uses the XBoard protocol.
  • Play using the Internet Chess Server.
  • Make two different chess engines play against each other.
  • Check if a movement is allowed.
  • Markers for possible moves, the opponent's last move and possible check moves.
  • Option to undo and redo plays.
  • Interchangeable themes. It is possible to download new ones.
  • Use of the voice reader to describe the plays.
  • Saved plays in PGN format.
  • Time control clocks.

Dreamches

This program represents different chess boards in 3 dimensions. Although it includes its own game engine, it is possible to change it for more powerful ones.

You can see the notation of the moves on the screen, undo them and save the games in PGN format.

Monopoly

This popular game was born at the beginning of the 1904th century to spread the need for the equitable distribution of wealth and the single tax on land. Feminist activist Elizabeth Magie patented it in XNUMX under the name The Landlord's Game. There were two rules: one designed to encourage cooperation and mutual benefit, and another that encouraged competition and hoarding. In this way people would realize the dangers of capitalism.

Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, decided to market it under the name Monopoly, making the first rule disappear along the way and changing the name of the streets and properties to others from the city of Atlantic City. Darrow sold the game to a toy company that, just in case, also bought the patent from the original creator.

Atlantik

Here we have a KDE application  (Available Store in Flatub) This is an online game in which participants have to purchase properties in the United States and Europe while traveling on an ocean liner. The objective of the game is to improve profitability by making constructions while trying to bankrupt the rest of the opponents.

Atlantik is the version for KDE, there is also one for GNOME called GTKAtlantik that can be found in the repositories of the different distributions.
