Canva versus Clipchamp in Ubuntu Studio

We compare Canva and Clipchamp

The emergence of cloud services is making operating systems irrelevant when determining what software can be used.r. In this post we are going to see how Canva versus Clipchamp behave from the Edge browser in Ubuntu Studio.

Of course, From the orthodox point of view of defending free software, there is much to object to the use of these services, but we must recognize that they are applications that make the work much easier.

Clarification: This is an independent evaluation of the paid versions of both services and do not include referral links. I paid for both subscriptions.

Canva versus Clipchamp

Canva is a service designed for independent professionals and companies that need content for print, websites or social networks. It also has artificial intelligence tools to create images or text.

Clipchamp (Now owned by Microsoft) specializes in video editing and creation. Its artificial intelligence focuses on making editing easier.

The comparison was done using Microsoft Edge Version 119.0.2132.0 on Ubuntu Studio 23.10 Mantic Minotauer.

Templates

Canva Home Page

Canva has more templates and predefined formats than Clipchamp

Canva's selection of templates includes the most popular social networks. Some of them are oriented towards marketing or the creation of courses while others are related to festivities, sporting or family events.

Clipchamp Home Page

Clipchamp also has templates for social media videos

Clipchamp has templates for Youtube (most are), Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook ads.  An important part is dedicated to video games, although there are also cooking or sports videos. Also for different festivities.

Sizes

Here we find a fundamental difference. If you do not use a template, Canva allows us to select the size in pixels, Clipchamp instead gives us options for aspect ratios.

The Canva video editor

Canva has the same interface for creating video and graphic content

Canva gives you the same options whether it's videos or graphics. Just change the video player at the bottom. On the left we have the collection of templates and the selection of styles which are the combination of color schemes and templates.

Clipchamp Video Editor

Clipchamp's video editing interface also follows the traditional model.

Clipchamp offers no surprises in the design of its online video editor. The classic track model, the display screen on top and the options menus on the sides.

Elements

When it comes to the options menu to add to the video, Canva wins by far.  It has a huge collection of graphic elements, photos, stock videos and music. In addition, it integrates with artificial intelligence services to generate presenters who speak with a natural accent (Requires hiring an external service). You can also generate videos (18 seconds and with a monthly limit) and images using Canva, Dall-E or Google's own engine.

Clipchamp has more or less the same categories, although with not as many options. However, it stands out with two features, the automatic subtitle generator and the realistic voice generator. The generator includes several voices for different Spanish accents and can work in conjunction with the subtitle generator.

Both services allow you to record both the webcam and the screen, including a specific browser tab, although in Clipchamp the process is more complicated at first.

Use

Both tools are easy to use, although some functions are sometimes difficult to find. Clipchamp is unbearably slow when loading stock files. For the rest, the decision to use one or the other is perfectly clear. Clipchamp is a fraction of the cost of Canva and is ideal if you create amateur videos. Canva is a must-have option if you are an individual professional or an SME that cannot afford to produce professional-quality content.

Personally, I would love to have the time to create content with Krita, Kdenlive, The Gimp, Blender and all the awesome tools that open source offers us. Unfortunately, I don't have the necessary time and these tools make my work much easier.
