Cinnamon 4, a new version that will be the fastest of all

Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon Screenshot

One of the most popular desktops in the Gnu / Linux world, that is, Cinnamon, will soon receive an update, coming to Cinnamon 4.0. The big version of Cinnamon will focus on two points: fix the graphical problems that are popping up and make it a faster desktop than it currently is.

Cinnamon is the default desktop in Linux Mint, but it is true that its popularity has made it a desktop for many distributions, including Ubuntu. So, Cinnamon 4.0 will work on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS as well as later versions of Ubuntu like the upcoming Ubuntu 18.10 release. But speed will not be the only thing that is improved for the next version. Several users have reported problems with the graphical operation of the desktop, thus creating certain graphical scraps that are not very pretty.

Clem Lefebvre's team will try try different resolutions and different graphics cards in order to be able to fix these graphics problemsAlthough the solution may not be to improve Cinnamon but to solve the problems with certain graphics cards that many users currently use.

Cinnamon 4 is not yet available, but it is true that we can have this desktop in our Ubuntu and distributions based on this distribution the latest version of this desktop, without needing to install Linux Mint. For that, we have to open a terminal and execute the following code:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:embrosyn/cinnamon
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

This will cause us to add an external repository to our Ubuntu and to remove and install the latest version of Cinnamon from this repository. If we don't want to use an external repository, then we can use the version of Cinnamon found in the official Ubuntu repositories, an older and rougher version than the latest versions of Cinnamon. This can be installed by running the following command:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

This will make us have Cinnamon on Ubuntu, but remember that we have to wait a few more weeks to have Cinnamon 4 on our computer.
