Today there are very few market opportunities in the world of web browsers. And, in the end, users end up using the most popular browsers, such as Chrome / Chromium, Firefox or Opera, and they are not aware that in reality there is a great variety of browsers that are even lighter and more optimal than the ones we already know. .

Therefore, in Ubunlog we want to dedicate an article to dillo, the Navigator lighter that we can find without any doubt. Dillo is a cross-platform web browser, written in C, and free under the GPLv3 license. We tell you more about it and how we can install it on our Ubuntu.

As we said, Dillo is a browser very fast and minimalist. Still, it is clear that its low consumption of resources is not in vain. In fact, Dillo only supports HTML, XHTML, and some elements of HTML5 y CSS in its latest version. So we can forget about executing scripts, or displaying very complex styles in this browser, which does not have to be far from negative.

It is true that today, and increasingly, web applications are gaining an abysmal importance. We are walking to a point where practically everything will be stored in the well-known cloud, and consequently the memory of our devices will no longer be so necessary.

Still, it is clear that Dillo remains aside from this philosophy that is so much in fashion today, and in return it provides us an extremely fast browser that will be great for us if we want to visit websites whose content is mostly based on text or images (eg: websites of newspapers, magazines, blogs ...). In fact, it is the browser that mini-distros usually carry by default, such as DSL (Damn Small Linux).

And it is that the main objectives of Dillo are the democratization access to internet information, fullfilment of security requirements y Privacy of the user, and high efficiency browser. In addition, these are its characteristics, and as you can see, some of them attract a lot of attention:

  • It occupies less than 300KB
  • Completely written in C
  • Free Software under the GPL license
  • Works on a wide variety of machines
  • Very fast

To install it we can do it directly from the Ubuntu Software Center, since Dillo it is already in the official repositories from Ubuntu. If you want to do it from the terminal, we can also do it as usual, executing the following:

sudo apt-get install dillo

From Ubunlog We encourage you to try this light, optimal and fast browser. It certainly has its point and, as we have said, if we only tend to consume web content based on text or images, this is our browser. What do you think?

It is light because it loses countless technologies and functions of current browsers, it is not funny, it is like going back to the past
