eDEX-UI, turn your touch screen into a futuristic desktop

edex-ui

Today's developers are increasingly outdoing themselves to provide users with more beautiful graphical interfaces than any other. They do this so their loyal customers feel comfortable using the features that their apps offer.

Some of these developers when designing the graphical interfaces of their applications are inspired by others applications, while others innovate by producing something new inspired by what already exists, but also other often unusual things.

If you have touch screens or monitors, the article we will talk about today is probably from your grade.

eDEX-UI is a full-screen, highly configurable and cross-platform application which resembles a futuristic movie-like computer interface, running on Linux, Windows, and MacOS.

About eDEX-UI

eDEX-UI creates the illusion of a windowless desktop environment, it is heavily inspired by DEX-UI and TRON Legacy movie effects.

eDEX-UI uses a number of open source libraries, frameworks, and tools. It was designed to be used on devices with large touch screens, but it works well on a normal desktop computer, also on touch screen tablets and laptops.

Unlike similar projects, eDEX-UI is implemented and suitable for a real work environment.

The environment It is built using the Electron platform and is available in versions for Linux, Windows, and macOS.

  • The side panel reflects the status of system parameters such as CPU load, memory consumption, network activity, and data from temperature sensors.
  • At the bottom there is a File Manager and an on-screen keyboard that allows you to use the interface on touch screens.
  • The Central element is a terminal emulator on Linux it is bash, while on Windows it is Power Shell.
  • The environment can be configured to your liking, for example connected colors and themes connected to the modified panel.

As well an on-screen keyboard is incorporated into its GUI, as eDEX-UI is designed to be used with a touch screen, although multitouch does not currently work.

The application works smoothly with normal screens: when using a physical keyboard, pressing the keys illuminates the virtual keyboard.

How to install eDEX-UI on Ubuntu and derivatives?

If you are interested in being able to install this great application you can do it in the following way.

Es It is important to mention that this application as such is not a desktop environment And it also doesn't matter which one you have in your system

Since the application runs in full screen mode (like when you put a video in full screen) it cannot replace the work of a desktop environment as such.

This application is not designed to do any practical work on your system; it just makes your device or computer feel incredibly geeky.

That said, in order to add this application to our system, we will have to get the latest version stable of this from the following link.

As you can see "At least at the moment" there are two versions of the application for Linux in the AppImage format which are for computers with 32-bit processors and another for 64-bit computers.

Here DYou must download the one indicated to your architecture, if you do not know which ones are going to open a terminal on your system and in it you are going to execute the following command:

uname -m

To download from the terminal you can do it with any of the following commands, for 32-bit systems:

wget https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui/releases/download/v1.1.2/eDEX-UI.Linux.i386.AppImage

While for those who have 64-bit processors the package you are going to download is:

wget https://github.com/GitSquared/edex-ui/releases/download/v1.1.2/eDEX-UI.Linux.x86_64.AppImage

Once the download is done, we will give execution permissions to the downloaded file with:

sudo chmod a+x eDEX-UI.*.AppImage

And with this they can run the application by double-clicking the downloaded file or from the terminal with:

./eDEX-UI.Linux.i386.AppImage

O

./eDEX-UI.Linux.x86_64.AppImage

If you want to know more about the application and how to configure it to your liking, you can visit the wiki of this in this link.
