It was recently announced through a blog post, the release of the new version of "Elementary OS 7.1", which arrives based on Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS and with the Linux 6.2 HWE kernel with improved support for 13th generation Intel processors, Intel Arc graphics cards and AMD Zen 4 CPUs, improvements in privacy, applications and more.

The new version that is presented of Elementary OS 7.1 features a large number of changes and improvements of which stands out its integration with FreeDesktop.org portals and of which we can find «Background and auto start» which informs the user when apps are running in the background and requires a separate credential to launch apps automatically.

The new portal has already been used in the Calendar, Mail, and Tasks apps to request the auto-run feature. Additionally, Calendar, Email Client, and Notes use the "File Selector" portal to request permissions when trying to access external files when performing operations such as adding an attachment to an email or exporting calendar files.

Another highlight of Elementary OS 7.1 is the email client that has been redesigned. With this, now when writing messages, the ability to insert images in their place, attach attachments to forwarded messages and choose from various signature options has been added.

In the sidebar, the archive and spam folders have been moved to the top level, the ability to rename folders from the context menu has been added, plus performance for switching between folders has been improved. Added a new “Move Conversation” menu and added the ability to unarchive and move messages and implemented displaying a separate information panel when there is an invitation in a message sent via the calendar scheduler.

In addition to this, in Elementary OS 7.1 the Login and lock screen pages take into account basic settings specified by the user in their session, such as keyboard, mouse, and touchpad settings, text and font sizes, night mode settings, and colors of active elements.

In the file manager, added a new dropdown menu located in title area which offers undo/redo buttons and settings for zooming, showing directories in front of files, selecting a double-click response, showing hidden files, and thumbnail options. The tab context menu has been reorganized and tab movement in drag and drop mode has been improved.

Search functions in the Code text editor have been redesigned and have been moved to a separate menu, as they now offer an added option to search for complete words, in addition to guaranteeing the storage of modified search parameters between sessions.

Of the other changes that stand out:

  • Added ability to rename files in bulk
  • Instead of a list of switches, round buttons are used.
  • The ability to connect simultaneously via multiple VPNs is provided.
  • Added the ability to quickly switch to airplane mode by pressing the middle mouse button on the gauge.
  • AppCenter now shows what permissions listed or downloaded Flatpak apps require to run properly.
  • The display of Bluetooth devices on the panel has been redesigned, showing user-assigned names first.
  • The accuracy of the battery charge level indication has been improved.
  • Updated icons on Bluetooth indicators, network connection, night mode, notifications and volume control.
  • The volume change indicator uses round playback control buttons.
  • Work continued to modernize the application design and introduce a responsive design that adapts to screens of any size.
  • GNOME Web (Epiphany) from GNOME 44, packaged in Flatpak, is proposed as a web browser.
  • Implemented the ability to exchange files with other devices via Bluetooth, using the “Send files via Bluetooth” item in the context menu.
