According to what was announced yesterday, Gimp 2.10.36, the best-known open source photo retouching and image manipulation program, is now available. What is available is only valid for Windows, Mac users will have to wait a bit. In the case of Linux, although the release notes say that the Flatpak version is available, the repository has not yet been updated at the time of publication.
To put in context, The recently released Ubuntu Studio 23.10 Mantic Minotaur comes with version 2.10.34, which is the immediately previous version.
Gimp 2.10.36 is now available with these new features
The most important changes with respect to previous versions are the following:
Support for two new color palettes
- Adobe Swatch Exchange (ASE): It is a file format that allows the exchange of color palettes between different applications.
- Adobe Color Book (ACB): It is a collection of predefined color palettes that are based on standards such as Pantone, Trumatch or Focoltone.
New gradient
The new addition to the list of gradients goes from foreground color to transparency by inserting hard edge transitions between the two colors.
According to the developers, it is possible, from the gradient tool, to generate patterns very quickly using the "Repeat" option and, alternating repetitive color shapes with total transparency on a given background.
Share of GIF files
GIF files allow you to create simple animations by quickly displaying superimposed images without requiring such large files.
The new version of Gimp is capable of loading GIF images containing PixelAspectRatio header metadata allowing different resolutions to be established per dimension. This way the image is rendered properly (instead of appearing flattened on the monitor).
For this to work, we must uncheck the "Point by point" option from the View menu.
Text tool
Formatting is more responsive when changing and selecting text.
User interface
Optimized the response when mousing over the lock buttons (White Frame) and when the lock is activated a white padlock appears in the corner.
Help
The user manual index can now be accessed from the help menu
