In this short post we will see how to install the Gitter desktop application on Ubuntu 16.04 / 17.10 / 18.04 desktops using the corresponding .deb package or via its snap package. Gitter will allow users to create, organize and grow communities easily based on different ideas and themes. Whether it's a small or large group, Gitter can help communicate to group members. These conversations will be available on your desktop, mobile devices, and anywhere you have Gitter installed.

Install Gitter on Ubuntu
Gitter Desktop App Installation Using the .DEB Package
To install Gitter using its .DEB package, we just have to go to the following link for download and select the appropriate .DEB version. After this, the download will begin.
The typical download window should open. If you select “To open with”Will allow you to download and install the .DEB package.
If you choose the option «Save File«, The file will be downloaded and saved on your computer. This is usually done in the ~ / Downloads folder of your user's home directory.
After downloading, go to your downloads folder and find the file that you just saved. Then right-click on the downloaded file and select «Open with software installation«.
When the Ubuntu software program opens, click Install to begin the installation. The system should ask you to type and confirm your password before the installation can continue. When you're done, Gitter should be installed and ready to go.
To start it, you just have to search for the program on your computer. You should be able to see a pitcher on your team like the one shown below:
After launching the application, we will see the screen to log in. We can log in with our GitHub account, Twitter, etc..
Install Gitter Desktop via Snap package
Gitter can also be install using Ubuntu snap package. This might be the fastest way to install Gitter. Snap packages are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Gnu / Linux distributions from a single build.
To install through Snap, we will be able to open the Ubuntu software option and look in it for Gitter Desktop.
We can also choose to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and execute in it:
sudo snap install gitter-desktop
Uninstall Gitter Desktop
Both facilities can be eliminated from the Ubuntu Software option looking for Gitter Desktop.
However, we will also be able to remove the program using the terminal. For uninstall the installation option using the .DEB file, we will only have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write:
sudo apt purge gitter
If we opt for the installation using the snap package, for the uninstallation we will open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) we will write in it:
sudo snap remove gitter-desktop
