Glimpse 0.1.0, now available the first stable version of the alternative to GIMP ... by the name

glimpse

Although there are many more image editors, I think there are two that stand out from the rest: Photoshop and GIMP. I think there are not a few who prefer Adobe's proposal, but GIMP allows us to do everything we want and it does it in free and open source software. The problem, or well, some see a problem in its name, since "GIMP" is a bad word in some languages, so a team decided to develop glimpse.

Glimpse is a fork of GIMP that, after proposing that the original software change its name, decided to launch its own version, with a new name and starting to become independent from GIMP 2.10.2, the version previous to the most updated but the one that It is still available as a Snap package (the one from the official repositories is even older). After some time in development, yesterday the first stable version of this more friendly named GIMP, at least in countries where the original name doesn't sound right.

Glimpse was born because GIMP sounds bad in some languages

Glimpse 0.1.0 does not include major changes. Its developers say most of the changes have focused on renaming, removing some obvious distractions from the user interface, learning about the various technologies involved, and starting to pave the way forward. In the future, it is understood that what we will have will be a GIMP with another point of view, something like we already had in the past, when GIMP was opened in three different windows and there was the possibility of modifying it to make it look more like Photoshop .

As we read in the project download page,Glimpse 0.1.0 is now available for Windows (since here) and for Linux. Linux users can use the Flathub version, for which we must have enabled support for Flatpak packages in our distribution, as long as it is not by default, or the Snap version. The commands to install them would be the following:

  • Flatpak version: flatpak install flathub org.glimpse_editor.glimpse
  • Snap version: sudo snap install glimpse-editor

Personally, I prefer to use the official version, but we will have to wait for future versions to see if they add functions that are really worth it. If you give Glimpse a try, feel free to leave your experiences in the comments.

De memento, as a user it has not contributed anything to me. It is a GIMP by another name.
