GNOME's initial setup is already based on GTK4 and libadwaita, among the most notable changes this week

GNOME Initial Setup with GTK4 and libadwaita

In recent weeks, in This week in GNOME many changes have been posted including "ported to GTK4 and libadwaita". GTK4 is the latest major version of the user interface toolkit that originally included "GIMP" in its name, and was released in December 2020. Although it may seem like a long time, the truth is that it is not, and so much so that “GNU Image Manipulation Program” is still in GTK2 in its stable version.

Among the novelties that have mentioned this week, we have one that we will see soon after the fresh installation, although in Ubuntu it is barely visible. This is the initial configuration of GNOME (GNOME Initial Setup), which has begun to use the aforementioned GTK4 and libadwaita. you have the rest of new arrivals from week 54 below.

This week in GNOME

  • Console is now based on GTK4.
  • New version of the GTK port of the WebKit rendering engine. WebKitGTK 2.36.5 includes security patches, makes video playback work again on Yelp, and fixes signal WebKitWebView::context-menu in GTK4 builds.
  • GNOME Builder has received many changes, and is on the way to be completely based on GTK4. Among the news:
    • Searches in files and projects are back.

    • Auto-hiding of the minimap.
    • Indents return to XML and C.
