GNOME continues to update applications to use GTK4, such as Epiphany and Kerberos

Share WiFi with GNOME Shell extension

GNOME has published a weekly note about updates in his circle in which little stands out. The general news is that they are still working to update applications with new technologies, among which are GTK4, GNOME 43 and libadwaita. Of course, there are many developers who make up the circle, and during week 66 of TWIG there have been releases of new versions of apps, among which there is one that I did not know: Hebbot, a bot that manages the news of what's new in GNOME.

What I also think draws a bit of attention is that there are applications that bring us new features very frequently, such as Eyedropper, a color picker, or Tagger, an application for editing song metadata. Next you have the News list complete that they published yesterday.

This week in GNOME

The first thing Project GNOME has published this week is what's new in the GNOME Foundation. For example, the sysadmin team has been busy removing deprecated services to reduce the maintenance load, focusing on the essentials, and taking care of Flathub a bit. This and other details are available in this week's GNOME note, available at the end of this article.

As for the news of the software itself, this week they have published the following:

  • GLib has fixed a couple of bugs, adding support for optimized checks of g_str_has_prefix()g_str_has_suffix() by passing them through static strings. A race condition has also been investigated with the handling of EINTR y close() en g_spawn_*() and it has been fixed.
  • Epiphany (GNOME Web) already uses GTK4.
  • Kerberos Authentications has ported its krb5-auth-dialog to GTK4 and libadwaita, allowing it to now be used on mobile as well.

Kerberos

  • Identity, an application to compare images and videos, has released v0.4.0 of the app. It has a new media properties dialog that shows some information about the current video. Opening files by dragging and dropping now works in the flatpak version thanks to the fact that it now uses the GNOME 43 platform.

Identity of GNOME

  • gtk-rs has released a new version with many improvements and fixes.
  • Retro, a clock that can be configured with CSS, has been released.

  • Tube Converter v2022.10.3 has added these new features:
    • Added a preference to embed metadata in a download.
    • Added the ability to download subtitles for a video.
    • A proper stop function for downloading has been implemented.
    • "New Filename" is now allowed to be empty. If empty, the title of the video will be used.
    • Improved video url checking.

  • Tagger v2022.10.4 has improved:
    • Added an advanced search feature to search the content of file tags to find properties that are empty or contain a certain value. You have to write! in the search box to activate it and get more information.
    • Added “Discard Unapplied Changes” action.
    • Tagger now remembers the properties of user-filled tags waiting to be applied.
    • Fixed handling of ogg files.
    • Improved close and reload dialogs.

tagger 2022.10.4

  • Hebbot is now smarter. He now scans our messages for keywords, and can match them to appropriate projects.
  • Flat Seal 1.8.1 has arrived with support for the new permission --socket=gpg-agent, more translations, now use different colors to override status icons, updated icon from flatpak version and fixed important bugs.

GNOME Flatseal

  • Eyedropper 0.4 has arrived with more new features, such as that you can now search by the color of the name.
  • New extension for GNOME Shell that adds a switch to the WiFi menu, in the top panel menu, which shows a QR code that shows information about the active connection. The intention is to quickly share the connection with devices that can read QR codes, such as mobile phones and tablets, so that they can connect faster without having to type the password.

New extension for GNOME Shell to share WiFi

And that's been it for this week at GNOME.
