GNOME Software will be renewed using the new GTK and libadwaita, among the news this week

This week in GNOME

If seven days ago we said which GNOME was going to improve its Settings app, this week it's the turn of the Software center. In a change that doesn't need much explanation, they have begun to replace the old and discontinued GTK APIs with the latest versions of GTK and libadwaita. This change won't affect how the GNOME Official Software Store works, but it will look more modern and its design more consistent with the rest of the desktop.

This week's article has been rather discreet. Counting the previous point, only five have been published new arrivals more, and they are the ones you have after the cut.

This week in GNOME

  • About GTK, we read:

“After four years, GTK maintainers are removing the Autotools build from the GTK 3.x branch; if you want to compile or package GTK 3.x you will now have to use the Meson build system. The documentation has been updated accordingly. The resulting build artifacts have been checked for consistency, and the Meson build has been tested across different platforms and toolchains, but if you experience regressions, be sure to submit a ticket to the GTK issue tracker."

  • A lot of testing has been done on GLib, checking many complex interactions between different types of accounts in GObjects.
  • Upscaler 1.1.0 has been released with:
    • Replaced the Increase Scale by One Page dialog.
    • Added Open With function.
    • Improved the flow of applications.
    • Checked the output of the algorithm in case of failure.
    • Added percentage.
    • Improved icon.
    • Now suggests filename when selecting output location.
    • Renamed "Open File" to "Open Image" for consistency.

  • In the documentation, work has started on PyGObject Guide.
  • On the curious or miscellaneous point, they are conducting a survey on how people use search in GNOME, with the aim of improving automated tests.

And that's been it for this week at GNOME.
