How to hide external drives and devices in Ubuntu

Hide devices

Sometimes, especially if we have many partitions on our hard drive, the Nautillus sidebar, where you can see all the connected drives, shows more than we want, need or are interested in seeing. We can hide devices in Ubuntu? Yes. And it is not too complicated a task, although, as in everything, you have to know the process.

Although the process will be very similar in other versions, what we are going to explain in this article is how to hide devices in the standard version of Ubuntu. The screenshots included are from Ubuntu 16.10, but the process will be the same in previous versions, such as Ubuntu 14.04 or Ubuntu 16.04. Here are the steps to follow so that those units we don't want to see in Nautilus disappear from the sidebar.

Hide devices in Ubuntu

  1. The first thing we have to do is open the Disks application, which we can access from the Launcher or by pressing the Super key (the one with the Windows logo) and searching for the word.

Open Disk utility

  1. The next step is to select the partition that we want to hide.
  2. Next, we click on the gear icon, that is, on «More actions».

Ubuntu Disk Utility

  1. From the options it offers us, we choose "Edit the assembly actions ...".

Edit mount actions

  1. A window like the one below will appear, where the first step will be to deactivate «Automatic mounting options».

Hide devices

  1. With the rest of the options activated by the previous step, we unchecked the "Show in user interface" box. This will prevent it from appearing in Nautilus.
  2. We click OK.
  3. Finally, when it asks us for the password, we put it and we give it and Enter / click Authenticate.

enter password

And we would already have it. Now we will have to repeat the process for the rest of the partitions that we want to hide, if there is any other. Personally, I do not have any that I would never like to see, since my equipment is only played by me. What partitions would you hide?
