How to install Kodi in Ubuntu, for many the best multimedia player

kodi

Multimedia players in Ubuntu there are many, too many I would say. To play files such as videos or single songs I usually use VLC, an all-rounder program that does the job perfectly. It is also a multi-platform program, so its use is practically the same in any operating system. But there are still sections where the VLC does not reach, so we will have to look for alternatives. One of those alternatives can be Kodi, the multimedia center formerly known as XBMC that offers us all the options we can imagine, such as playing movies from web pages or watching sports on streaming. In this article we will teach you how to install Kodi on Ubuntu (and some more recommendations).

How to install Kodi media player

First of all, we will install a necessary package for Kodi. We will do it by opening a Port and writing the following:

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common

It is possible that we already have it installed, but better be sure. If we already have it installed, the terminal will notify us that no changes have been made.

Kodi is not in the official repositories, so we will have to add repository. The fastest and easiest way to install the famous multimedia player is to copy and paste the following commands in a Terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kodi

How to get the most out of Kodi

This player is very, very powerful. It can reproduce practically any type of file, we can create a library with metadata ... to say everything that it is capable of doing would be practically impossible, but we can recommend some add-ons and repositories that can get us out of more than one trouble. I would recommend two add-ons:

  • Pelisala letter. You don't have to be a fortune teller to know what this is for add-on. With Pelisalacarta we can access a good catalog of web pages that offer movies and series in streaming. Some of these sites require us to be registered, but there are many that work without registration, which will be especially useful for general search.
  • adrienlist. This add-on It will allow us to watch movies and series on demand, but it is not its strongest point. Adryan adds live channels and updates them from time to time, so we can watch paid channels without paying a single Euro. Of course, each one is responsible for their actions, as well as for "inviting a coffee" (as he puts it) to the creator of the add-on.

Initial setup

First of all, it is worth changing the language to Spanish. We will do it as follows:

  1. We go to System / Settings.

kodi-1

  1. Then we go into Appearance.

kodi-2

  1. Now we go into International.

kodi-3

  1. Lastly, we choose our language and schedule. As you can see, on the right we have all the necessary options. I have chosen Spanish language (Spanish until we change it) and 24h from Spain. Now we are going to install a repository.

Installing repositories: SuperRepo

To install a repository, we will do the following:

  1. Let System / File manager.

kodi-file-manager

  1. We click on Add font.

kodi-add-source

  1. In the window that opens, we click where it says « »And add http://srp.nu as you can see in the following image.

add-repo-kodi-2

  1. In the lower box, we put a name for it. I have given the official, which is SuperRepo.
  2. The repository is not installed yet. To install it, we have to go to Settings / Add-ons, we choose «Install from a .zip file»And we choose the unit that will have the name that we have given in the previous step.

install-superrepo

  1. Inside the SuperRepo unit, we enter the Kodi version that we have installed (in this case Jarvis), we move to the «All» folder and install the repository.

install-superrepo-2

Installing add-ons on Kodi

There are two ways to install a add-on: from a .zip file or from a repository. If we have downloaded a add-on from the internet, we will install it from a .zip file as we have done from step 5 above. What we are going to do now is install a add-on from a repository. It is almost exactly the same, but instead of choosing "Install from a .zip file", we choose "Install from repository", which will allow us to navigate through its sections, choose what type of add-on we want to install and install it. In the following screenshots you can see images of the add-on Adryanlist that is in the «Video Add-ons» section, like Pelisalacarta.

I have not been able to install it, I get this in the terminal and I don't know how to solve it:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    kodi: Depends: kodi-bin (> = 2: 16.0 ~ git20160220.1654-final-0trusty) but it won't install
    It depends: kodi-bin (= 2.2.0)
E: Problems could not be corrected, you have retained broken packages.

      Hi, Alfonso. Try before writing sudo apt-get install kodi-audioencoder- * kodi-pvr- *

      And that

      sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config software-properties-common

      Let's see if it works.

      A greeting.

        Thanks Pablo, then I try.

Can't install even the first line you put me: unfulfilled dependencies, file conflicts and broken packages. I'm going to leave it for the moment Pablo.

The truth is that it surprises me, because I have never had problems and I have been installing it on Linux for several years (also on Win and Mac).

Perhaps the best thing in your case is to look for a .deb package of an older version. The bad thing is that I've been looking for it and I can't find it. They also do not allow installing Kodibuntu if it is not from the ISO, but that does not work for you.

Thank you pablo. I have tried to install it in Ubuntu 16 Mate (before it was in Ubuntu 14.4 LTS) and it happens to me exactly the same. I appreciate and thank you for your interest.

What do you mean by Ubuntu 16 Mate? You mean Ubuntu MATE version 16.04? How have you tried it? If you have a Pendrive, to eliminate options, you can try to make a bootable USB (with Lili USB creator or uNetBootin). I would do it with Ubuntu 15.10, since version 16 is still in alpha phase and may have shortcomings. If a clean installation does not work for you, it only occurs to me that your computer does not download / install some packages (due to incompatibility?).

            A greeting.

The tutor is very good. One question: does this media server work like plex? I mean if you stream to a team that has a client, or just play?

    1.    Paul Aparicio said

Hello, leillo1975. Kodi does everything, but you have to install the necessary add-on for everything. Right now I have looked at the SuperRepo repository and there is an add-on called PlexXBMC that is used to access your Plex. There are add-ons to do almost everything, you just have to find them. Anyway, I have also explained how to add SuperRepo because there are hundreds of add-ons.

      A greeting.

Hello, I have Kubuntu and I decided to try despite having a very slow internet (200 kbps or less) and following all your steps I managed to install it and then install the adrianlist addon updated to yesterday, when I want to watch a tv channel, nothing appears , says Loaded Flow or something like that, despite looking for low resolution channels nothing appears, it will be because something I am doing wrong or it is simply the slowness of my connection, thanks and regards

Close the session of your user and when you have to log in again, use the session selector to load Kodi. I hope I've helped. Salu2.
