How to install Mozilla Firefox 58 on Ubuntu 17.10

Mozilla Firefox

Surprisingly, last week the latest version of Mozilla Firefox came out, Firefox 58. This new version of Mozilla's browser continues with the Firefox Quantum project and this means that it speeds up the loading of web pages a little more. This is possible thanks to the WebAssembly technology that has been incorporated in this release.

Another novelty of Firefox 58 is regrouping the menu icons, which means increasing the space in the address menu as well as in the personalization of the web browser.

But the most striking thing about this version is that it includes a security patch against Meltdown and Specter, a patch that protects us from it. That is why this update is presented as important and for which we do not have to wait to have it in our Ubuntu.

To get Firefox 58 in Ubuntu 17.10 we have to go to the Mozilla download site y get the tar.bz2 package from Mozilla Firefox 58. Once we download and unzip it, we have to go to the folder where we have unzipped the folder and right-click on the Firefox file. In the drop-down menu that appears we select to create a shortcut.

Then that shortcut We move it to the dock, to the desktop or to the panel, where the executables of the applications that we usually use can be found and that's it. Now we only have to access the icon that we have created each time we want to use Firefox 58. It is very important that we do not delete the folder that we have downloaded since it is the one that contains the files of the new version.

There the possibility of unzipping the folder in a folder on the system, but besides being dangerous it also requires root permissions and we may not be. In this way, without the need for it, we can have and use Firefox 58.
