They have taken a while, but Dell is already selling its XPS 13 Developer Edition with Ubuntu 20.04 pre-installed

Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition with Ubuntu 20.04

Computers that carry Linux pre-installed are not lacking, but it is true that they are not as visible as those that carry Windows or macOS, since we can find them in practically any store, physical or online. One of the most popular options is a developer proposal from Dell, the company that He launched a new version of its XPS at the beginning of the year that even included a fingerprint reader. But that team was using a somewhat "old" version of Ubuntu, in quotes, for using an LTS version that was almost two years old. That has changed with the new Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition.

Dell's XPS 13 range are thin and light notebooks that offer a good image and great performance. The newer models have also improved the design, in part by greatly reducing the edges. The strange thing already on the eve of July is that Dell had not updated its flagship Linux product to include an operating system that was released in April. That has changed a few hours ago, and the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition already sold with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa.

Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition, an ultrabook with Ubuntu, now in its latest version

Canonical and Dell have been partners since 2012 to launch teams like this. After this launch, both companies have expressed their satisfaction, both Barton George, from Dell, speaking that their agreement with Canonical continues and they continue to sell Ubuntu certified laptops, such as Martin Wimpress, who entered Canonical thanks to his great work in Ubuntu MATE and that he is now Canonical's desk engineering director, saying that he is delighted with this arrival.

As for the specifications, this new version of the Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition does not include outstanding news, but we recall some specifications that are available at the same link where the device can be purchased, that is, from here:

  • 10th generation Intel Core i5.
  • Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, supported until 2025.
  • Intel UHD Graphics with shared graphics memory.
  • 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM.
  • 256GB of storage.
  • All of the above can be expanded, which will also increase its base price of $ 1.094 (the information for Spain has not yet been updated).

Logically, that a computer has Linux installed by default is an important point, but it must be taken into account that its price is also usually somewhat high. That being the case, in the case of Dell's XPS and that already includes Ubuntu 20.04, will you buy it?

1000 euros for hardware like that is nonsense, the processor and RAM are fine, but they are not pointers, the graphics is integrated, the 13-inch FHD screen and the capacity is scarce. Even assuming that the case has better materials and that the battery has good capacity, it is a very expensive equipment for what it offers.

I for 600 euros I buy one like it with Windows 10 and in half an hour I install a Linux
