In the next article we are going to take a look at jamovi. This is free and open source statistical software for Gnu/Linux, Windows and MacOS, which can be used as an alternative to SPSS. With this program we can make use of a new 'third generation' statistical spreadsheet that has been designed from the ground up to be easy to use.
Among other things, we can meet the possibility to use correlation and regression, non-parametric tests, contingency tables, reliability and factor analysis tools, and will also allow us to easily develop and publish our own analyzes. In addition, we can save all the data in a single file, to easily share and backup the data.
This project was founded to develop a free and open statistical platform that is also intuitive to use and can provide the latest advances in statistical methodology. The core of jamovi's philosophy is that scientific software should be 'community-driven', where anyone can develop and publish analyses, and make them available to a wide audience.
The program is based on the statistical language R, which will give us access to the improvements that the statistics community can offer. According to its creators, this program will always be free and open, because jamovi is made by the scientific community, for the scientific community.
General characteristics of jamovi
- The program provides a comprehensive set of analyzes for (not only) the social sciences; t tests, ANOVAs, correlation and regression, nonparametric tests, contingency tables, reliability and factor analysis. In addition, we will also have the jamovi library available, which is a library of additional analyzes contributed by experts in their field.
- Jamovi is a fully functional spreadsheet, immediately familiar to anyone. In it we can add, copy/paste data, filter rows, calculate new values or perform transformations on many columns at the same time.
- we can consult jamovi's 'syntax mode', where R syntax is available for each parse. It is also possible to run R code directly within the application with the Rj Editor.
- The ease of use makes this program ideal for introducing people to statistics., and its advanced features ensure that students will be well equipped for real research.
- Jamovi saves our data, analysis, options and results in a single file. In addition, you can make a backup of this file, share it with colleagues and at any time, reload it.

Install jamovi on Ubuntu
This program is available as a flatpak at flat hub. If you use Ubuntu 20.04 and you still do not have this technology enabled on your system, you can continue The Guide that a colleague wrote a while ago in this blog.
When you can install this type of package on your computer, it will only be necessary to open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the install command:
flatpak install flathub org.jamovi.jamovi
At the end of the installation, we can start the program through the launcher that we will find in our team. You can also type in following command in terminal:
flatpak run org.jamovi.jamovi
uninstall
If you would like to remove this program from your system, in a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) you just have to execute the command:
flatpak uninstall org.jamovi.jamovi
Jamovi aims to be platform neutral. The project was not founded to promote any particular statistical ideology. What it seeks is to serve as a space where different statistical approaches can be published side by side.
