KDE's Gwenview will allow two-finger zooming in Wayland, among the new features of this week

KDE's Gwenview will allow two-finger zooming

A few moments ago we have published an article about what's new in GNOME in which we said that we are in some dates in which a break and spend more time with the family is good. Looks like we'll all start doing it starting tonight, because Nate Graham has also posted his What's New article on KDE, also somewhat shorter and titled his article precisely «Vacation functions».

Among the novelties, the first one that he mentions is one that will only be available in Wayland, since this composer is the one that best supports gestures on the touch panel. Gwenview, KDE's image viewer, will be the one that allows you to do this, zoom with two fingers, and it will be possible in KDE Gear 23.04. It is a change made by developers Bharadwaj Raju and Carl Schuan. The rest of new arrivals are the ones you have below.

New Features Coming to KDE

  • Kate and KWrite now have options to always open each file in its own window, instead of tabs in a window (Christoph Cullmann, Kate & KWrite 23.04).
  • Elisa now supports creating and opening .pls playlist files (Marius Pa, Elisa 23.04).
  • When we try to use a type of VPN whose plugins are not installed, the notification indicating this now offers you the opportunity to install them (Nicolas Fella, Plasma 5.27).

Notice of lack of plugin in VPN

  • It is now possible to configure the Color Picker widget to show up to 9 color previews for quick use, or none at all if we don't use them because we use the widget only as a way to get color code values in the clipboard (Fushan Wen, Plasma 5.27):

Improvements in the user's interface

  • Okular's sidebar has been ported to use QDockWidget, allowing it to be relocated to other sides of the window or undocked to make it a floating window (Eugene Popov, Okular 23.04)
  • When a VPN configuration fails because plasma-nm was compiled without support for any of its optional plugins that provide this functionality, the notification now includes a button to report a bug that will take you to the distribution's bug tracker, because they are the source of the problem (Nicolas Fella, Plasma 5.27)

Correction of minor bugs

  • When permanently deleting a file, the "Permanently Delete" button returns to default keyboard focus (Felix Ernst, Dolphin 22.12.1)
  • In Plasma Wayland session, after KWin has been restarted for whatever reason, session termination actions such as Logout, Restart and Shutdown now work (David Edmundson, Plasma 5.27).
  • The Persian and Indian national calendars now show their correct month names (Fushan Wen, Plasma 5.27).

This list is a summary of the fixed bugs. The complete lists of bugs are on the pages of 15 minute bugvery high priority bugs and overall list. This week a total of 99 bugs have been fixed.

When will this all come to KDE?

Plasma 5.26.5 will arrive on Tuesday, January 3 and Frameworks 5.102 should arrive on the 14th of the same month. Plasma 5.27 will arrive on February 14, and KDE Applications 23.04 is only known to arrive in April 2023.

To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the repository backports of KDE, use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release.
