KDE 4.10: Display and monitor management improvements

KDE 4.10 monitor setup

KDE 4.10 looks more and more promising. To the new notification plasmoid written in QML, which we talked about a few days ago, now the new interface user for configure displays and monitors.

And although the current tool fulfills its mission, the truth is that it already needed an in-depth review, so the KDE developers have gotten to work on it. What are you most excited about? What KDE will finally remember previously connected monitorsso users won't have to configure the same monitor over and over again.

In this way, if the user connects, for example, an external monitor to his laptop, KDE will automatically place them on the left of the notebook screen; or if for example the user connects a projector, then KDE will clone the screen automatically. And of course, everything can be configured by the user according to their needs.

The display configuration module, written in QML, has received a code and face wash.

Users they will no longer have to configure their monitors using drop-down lists and selection items, now they will be able to do it interactively directly on the screen to configure, selecting its position by dragging the screen to the correct place, as well as its orientation and establishing which screen is the main one. Other options, such as the size and updating of the screen, still appear separately, although the goal of the developers is to have all the settings available directly on the screen that is being configured.

Although everything looks much more attractive, the goal is that the screens can be easily configured after simply connecting the monitors - always offering advanced options for users who need them.

Improvements and more improvements

Another issue that has been paid special attention is on which screen new windows open, something that does not always work well these days. The developers have noted that with this update windows and dialogs will finally be shown where they are supposed to.

They also plan to write a small effect for KWin that hides Plasma flickers when changing the settings of a screen. This in order to have a smoother transition facing the user.

The new display management module is expected to arrive in KDE SC 4.10, although it is not certain yet.
