KDE fixes several bugs and makes aesthetic touches before taking a few days off

KDE at Christmas

In case you haven't read it in the article about news in GNOME, we also congratulate you on Christmas from here, the news of the week in KDE. The last seven days on the project that started as Kool Desktop Environment have been normal in terms of work, but we probably won't hear more from them until next year. Nobody be scared and look at the calendar, there are 8 days left.

Among this week's new features there are not so many functions. We are already in the freeze, so now is the time to finish off what they already have available fixing bugs and with touch-ups that improve aesthetics. Nothing about Plasma 5 appears on the list, so it seems clear that they are already 100% focused on what they call KDE 6 Mega-Release (Plasma 6, Qt6 and Frameworks 6).

What's new in the KDE user interface

  • The Breeze theme smartphone icons have been revised and modernized to reflect the current look of phones (Áron Kovács):

  • The System Preferences font management page has been visually modernized to be more in line with Plasma 6's new frameless style (Carl Schwan):

Fonts in KDE System Preferences

  • Windows that do not appear in the Task Manager or Alt+Tab task switcher no longer appear semi-invisibly in the Overview effect (Akseli Lahtinen).
  • Breeze's non-editable frameless tabs (for example, tabs on a tabbed tool view or settings page) now expand to fill all available space by default, since there's no reason not to do so (Carl Schwan).
  • Improved text contrast for certain accent colors (Akseli Lahtinen).
  • After pasting a file into a Dolphin window, if the file ends up somewhere not in view, the view scrolls there so you can see it (Méven Car)
  • Okular's "Show Signature Panel" button now also opens the sidebar containing the signature panel, if it was closed at the time (Albert Astals Cid).
  • Elisa now supports cover images in Webp (Jack Hill) format.

Error correction

  • The screen locker has an alternate theme that appears when the active lock screen theme is broken. However, when the alternative theme breaks for some reason, now the screen lock process breaks with the dreaded "your lock screen is broken" message instead of not locking the screen at all, which is worse (Joshua Goins ).
  • File dialogs from a variety of Qt-yet-non-KDE applications will now have their name filters set correctly (Nicolas Fella).
  • When using a fractional scaling factor, the window outlines of the Breeze window decoration theme no longer show minor visual glitches (Vlad Zahorodnii).
  • Fixed an issue that could cause cursors to leave traces behind when using a fractional scaling factor and certain graphics cards that do not support hardware cursors (Vlad Zahorodnii).
  • Widgets that have been assigned keyboard shortcuts should now be more reliable to remember. This probably alleviates or fixes many of the “Can't activate Kickoff with meta key” (Akseli Lahtinen) errors.
  • Memory usage of NVIDIA GPUs is now represented with the correct unit in several System Monitor widgets and in the application of the same name (Arjen Hiemstra).
  • When using Bluetooth headphones with built-in volume buttons, pressing them now always displays the volume change OSD (Bharadwaj Raju).
  • The System Preferences task switcher page no longer confusingly uses the word “backtab,” and backward task switching invoked via Alt+Shift+Tab now works continuously if held down (Yifan Zhu).
  • Scroll bars of drop-down menus in QtQuick-based applications no longer inappropriately overlap menu items (Tomislav Pap).

In terms of number of bugs, this week a total of 155 have been corrected.

Performance and technical section

  • Okular has been ported to Qt 6 (Nicolas Fella, Sune Vuorela, and Carl Schwan).
  • The Wacom Tablet applet has been ported to Qt 6 (Nicolas Fella).
  • Fixed a source of crashes in Dolphin when browsing a slow Samba share - this time having to do with bottlenecks generating thumbnails (Harald Sitter).
  • Reduced memory usage of screen recording using KPipeWire. This won't completely solve the problem of screen recording taking up too much memory, but it already makes a big difference and should prevent complete resource exhaustion (Arjen Hiemstra).
  • The DrKonqi fault reporter is now capable of logging and reporting faults of the Powerdevil energy management subsystem (Harald Sitter).

When will this all come to KDE?

plasma 5.27.11 will arrive in February, Frameworks 114 in January and on February 28, 2024 Plasma 6, KDE Frameworks 6 and KDE Gear 24.02.0 will arrive.

To enjoy all this as soon as possible we have to add the repository backports of KDE, use an operating system with special repositories like Kde neon or any distribution whose development model is Rolling Release.
