KDE Gear 22.08 arrives with support for XDG Portals and the possibility of annotating in Gwenview, among other new features

Today, the 18th, the set of KDE apps for August 2022 had to arrive, and it had to do so with some expected news. A few moments ago, KDE has made the launch official de KDE Gear 22.08, and being a zero-point, or not including point numbering, it is an update that includes new features. For example, you can already annotate directly with Gwenview, for which it uses the same tool as Spectacle.

KDE Gear 22.08 Highlights

  • Spectacle now shows keyboard shortcuts with different capture modes from type selection. Also, when you open the annotation tool, it resizes itself to fit the entire capture.
  • Kalendar now includes contacts.
  • Itinerary has an integrated barcode to import ticketest to the app, and it also supports discount program cards.
  • Kate and KWrite receive support for using multiple cursors. For its part, KWrite supports tabs.
  • Filelight has received a facelift, and along the way they've made the code more maintainable by porting it to QtQuick.
  • KDE Partition Manager has fixed some glitches affecting the text in the info panel, and now displays human-readable text for how long a disk has been powered on.
  • Dolphin now allows you to organize files by extension.
  • Elisa has improved support on touch screens. On the other hand, you can disable automatic scanning when starting the app.
  • Support for XDG Portals to drag and drop files. This improves support for this type of action for isolated applications (sandbox).
  • Ark now checks that there will be enough free space in place when trying to unarchive something before it starts.
  • Clicking on a Konsole notification about a particular session now takes you to that Konsole session.
  • Skanpage now supports the export of searchable PDFs using optical character recognition.
  • Gwenview, KDE's popular image viewer, add annotations to its image editing functions. The annotation function is the same as that used in Spectacle.

KDE Gear 22.08 has been announced this morning in Spain, which means that its release it's official, but you will have to wait from a few hours to several weeks to be able to use it. The quickest thing to do on Debian-based operating systems is to use the KDE backports repository, or look them up on Flathub, which will also be coming soon.
