KDE Gear 23.04 introduces new apps, greatly improves existing ones

spectacle on KDE Gear 23.04

KDE knows that today the protagonist is another, specifically Ubuntu. Today, April 20, the launch of Ubuntu 23.04 and its other 10 official flavors must be made official, since, since the arrival of Edubuntu and Ubuntu Cinnamon, there are now a total of 11. The time at which the Team usually announces its releases K is at noon in Spain, around 14:XNUMX p.m., but today they have gone a little ahead with the presentation of KDE Gear 23.04 so you don't run into the Lunar Lobster ads.

KDE Gear 23.04 is a first version of a new series, and it is in these releases that new features are included. For example, and although I don't really like the changes, Spectacle will be able to record the screen, although for this they have had to change a lot internally and some of its design; You will have to try it and get used to it. On the other hand, there are new applications that have become part of the gear (Gear).

What's New in KDE Gear 23.04

  • New applications:
    • Tokodon: Mastodon client.
    • AudioTube: a music player based on YouTube content.
    • Plasma Tube- YouTube client that makes the most sense when used on a touch device.
    • Box: podcast client.
  • Improvements to NeoChat layout and video controls. A new command has also been added /knock to send a knock (door) event to a room, and you can edit a previous inline message from the chat panel. It also includes new keyboard shortcuts.
  • Spectacle has been completely redesigned to be faster and easier to use. In addition, now it allows annotating the captures before making them (in the purest style flameshot) and allows screen recording in Wayland. X11 is not mentioned, so I have two doubts: one, if it will support it or not; another, if it will also record sound. And while I think, a third: how will the quality of the recording. If there's one thing I love about SimpleScreenRecorder in X11, it's its ease of use and lossless quality. We will see.
  • Dolphin now allows you to configure how permissions are displayed in the details view. Additionally, it now supports iOS devices using the afc:// protocol, as well as file dialogs and the ability to display the number of pages in a document. It is also promised that Dolphin will be usable in superuser mode, but not like Nautilus does. When using sudo dolphin it tells us what to do, between what we have to install kio-admin. It's something that works for a while in KDE neon, and should be extended to other distros.
  • Gwenview supports zooming in and out with pincer gestures under Wayland, and has made other changes to make it more reliable.
  • Elisa now allows you to close the header, where the cover appears. As for lists, you can now open .pls files. Finally, they have added more radio stations.
  • Okular has seen the toolbar overlay modified to improve usability and relevance. Now includes view mode and zoom and view buttons on the left, with tools on the right. As in other 23.04 apps, you can zoom with Ctrl+scroll.
  • Filelight has a new list view on the left.
  • Kdenlive has introduced nested timelines, which allows you to select multiple clips, group them, and treat them as a separate sequence.
  • Kalendar has greatly improved the look of the calendar, and now you can define custom reminders.
  • Itinerary has seen the pages showing information about our trips redesigned, and includes more information about them.
  • Kate and KWrite can now open each new file you want to edit in its own window, instead of tabs under one window.
  • Ark comes with a richer splash screen, and the app now supports Stuffit file extraction.
  • Dragon Player has undergone a major look and feel overhaul, including the adoption of the hamburger menu from many other KDE applications, and a splash screen. You've also gotten a more intuitive and simplified set of default toolbar buttons.

KDE Gear 23.04 has been announced a few moments ago, and your code is now available. It should be coming to KDE neon and some Rolling Release distros soon. The rest of us will receive them depending on the update philosophy of our Linux distribution.
