With Lantern you can access censored websites in your country

censored website

One of the good things about the Internet is that we can visit web pages and services from anywhere on the planet. Or, well, this would be the case if there were no type of country blocking, something that, for example, services such as Netflix use. But, what happens if we want to enter a page and it does not allow us because it is blocked for connections made from our country? Well, there are solutions like Lantern.

Lantern is a free application that is available for Linux, Mac, Windows and mobile devices running Android operating system. His intention is to allow us skip the block that some pages they do depending on the country we are in, something they achieve using their own servers and the bandwidth of the users themselves. On the other hand, it is not a tool to provide us anonymity, far from it, but we will only be able to access pages that we could not before because we are not in the indicated country.

How to install and use Lantern in Ubuntu

Lantern installation couldn't be simpler: just click on the image that I'll put at the end of this post with the orange text to download the .deb package by Lantern. If nothing opens automatically at the end of the download, you have to double click to open the .deb package and it will open in the package installer of your GNU / Linux distribution, such as GDebi in Ubuntu MATE. When it finishes uploading the information, all we have to do is click the Install button (or Install package) and enter our password. Easy right?

Lantern Settings

Setting up this little app has no mystery. Once installed and executed, it will open a tab in our browser from which we can access the options. By clicking on the gear icon in the lower right part we can indicate if we want it to run automatically when the system starts, if we want all traffic to go through the proxy, if we want to provide anonymous usage data to improve the application (recommended) and if we want to manage the system proxy. It is best to leave everything by default, unless we want all traffic to pass through the proxy, in which case we will also have to check the second option box.

So you know, with Lantern you will no longer be left wanting to enter a web page because you are not in the country where it is available.
