Latest update for Ubuntu 17.10 changes Unity desktop to GNOME

Ubuntu 17.10

As we already knew, the next operating system Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) will arrive with GNOME Shell as default desktop environment instead of Unity desktop, which was Ubuntu's default desktop environment since 2011.

Now the latest update for the meta-package Ubuntu leaves the Unity desktop (and all associated components) from the list of things to be installed, adding instead to the GNOME-Shell.

Other packages and functions abandoned in this meta-package (which will therefore not be installed by default in the operating system images) also include Ubuntu's notification system, called Notify-OSD, as well as the overlay scroll bars, and the Unity control center, which is a derivative version of the GNOME control center.

Ubuntu developer Didier Roche has also spoken about the abandonment of Unity in the release notes for this meta-package:

Goodbye Unity. It's been a long and fun journey: from Unity0 for Ubuntu Netbook Edition, until Unity1 became Unity7 with the compiz C ++ and Nux additions.

We have had our times of joy, sadness, madness ... without also forgetting all the problems [...]

Many thanks to all those who have been involved in this project, those who are still here and those who left.

If you already run the daily Ubuntu 17.10 builds, you will be able to install the new update in the next few days. But when you do, keep in mind that Unity will not be uninstalled from your system, but the new GNOME packages will be installed together with your old Unity. The only difference is that the new Ubuntu 17.10 meta-package will not include Unity.

Although Ubuntu 17.10 does not have the Unity desktop by default, there is no reason not to use it. Unity 7 is still the default desktop environment for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, a version that will receive support until the next decade, at the same time that it will also be available for installation in Ubuntu 17.10 from the main repositories of the operating system.

Without unity in the future I go back to Windows.
Goodbye Ubuntu… .the best alternative to Windows was lost.

Hahahaha You were just looking for a pretext to switch to Windows. I'm a fan of Unity but with KDE or MATE the Linux ecosystem is much better than MocoSoft.

Hopefully the community ends unity 8 from here until 16.4 stops having XD updates. Yes, I like unity and what?

I just tried the ubuntu 17.10 iso and the truth left me much to be desired in both the configuration panel and the poorly distributed applications menu, another thing is the close buttons, minimize and to modulate the size of the window that are now On the right side it is somewhat shocking like the time and date format that lost a lot of style and quality now allowing only two formats, perhaps it is a matter of tricks as well as when it reproaches Windows 10 for its gossipy meddling of our data and which looks like a phone since we want a PC not a phone. Hopefully in the future Ubuntu does not resemble it despite the fact that today everyone wants connectivity to everything. I stick with version 16.04 without hesitation.

I'm glad they gave up on Unity.
I never liked it, and I use the Matte version.
