LineageOS 17.1 arrives, based on Android 10 and with these features

The developers of the LineageOS project presented the launch of the new version of on system "LineageOS 17.1" which arrives based on the Android 10 platform. Notably, version 17.1 was formed without passing 17.0 due to the nature of tagging in the repository.

It is observed that LineageOS 17 branch has reached parity in functionality and stability with branch 16 and it is recognized that it is ready to transition to the development stage of ensemble formation.

For those who are unfamiliar with LineageOS, you should know that this is an open source android fork for smartphones and tablets being originally a direct inheritance from CyanogenMod (it replaced CyanogenMod after leaving the Cyanogen Inc project)

Like CM, it is based on Google releases for the Android platform, including additional code..

Main new features of LineageOS 17.1

In the announcement of the release of this new version developers share:

We have been working extremely hard since the release of Android 10 last August to port our features to this new version of Android. Thanks to the massive refactoring done in some parts of AOSP, we had to work harder than expected to introduce some features, and in some cases, we introduced similar implementations to some of our features in AOSP (but we'll get to that later).

Compared to LineageOS 16, in addition to the specific changes of Android 10 in this new version, several improvements are included, of which support a new interface to create screenshots is highlighted which allows the user to be able to select certain parts of the screen for an image and edit screenshots.

Besides that the application proposed in AOSP (Android Open Source Project) to choose themes ThemePicker has been moved as the styles API previously used to select themes is deprecated. Not only does ThemePicker support all the features of styles, it is also ahead in functionality.

In LineageOS 17.1 we can also find that the ability to change fonts, icon shapes is implemented (QuickSettings and Launcher) and icon style (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth).

In addition to the ability to hide applications and block startup by assigning a password, the interface for launching applications Trebuchet Launcher has the ability to restrict access to the application through biometric authentication.

On the security side migrated patches are included that have accumulated since October 2019 and that support for in-display fingerprint sensors (FOD) was added.

Of the other changes that are highlighted in the announcement of this new version:

  • Wi-Fi screen returned.
  • Added support for pop-up camera and camera rotation.
  • The Emoji set on the AOSP on-screen keyboard has been updated to version 12.0.
  • The WebView browser component has been updated to Chromium 80.0.3987.132.
  • Instead of PrivacyGuard, AOSP's full-time PermissionHub is used for flexible management of application permissions.
  • Instead of the Expanded Desktop API, the standard AOSP navigation tools are involved via on-screen gestures.
