Linux 5.1-rc2 now available, keep polishing the next kernel version

Linux Kernel

Like almost every Sunday, Linus Torvalds published yesterday a new version of the Linux kernel. But it is not an official version, if not Linux 5.1-rc2, which will be the last release until the window is closed for the next version of the Linux kernel to continue adding improvements. According to Torvalds, everything has gone very normal, but warns that it is too early to know because people have not had time to discover problems.

La new version comes with many patches that will help polish v5.1 of the kernel, but the kernel has hardly been touched. In fact, two-thirds of the new version is for the "tools /" subdirectory only. Everything else is split between architecture updates, drivers, and filesystem code. So far everything is going well, but Linus asks the community to test it further.

Linux 5.1 is coming in May

If there are no surprises, Linux 5.1 will arrive on may 5. It has been confirmed that Ubuntu 19.04 will arrive with v5, but the next version of the operating system developed by Canonical will arrive two weeks before v5.1, so it is completely ruled out to use this version at the time of its launch. The latest public version is a v5.0.2 that corrects problems found in v5.0 and v5.0.1 and it is likely that this is the one chosen for Disco Dingo.

If they see fit, in the future an update of the Linux Kernel 5.1 will be released for Ubuntu 19.04 and Ubuntu 18.10. It is less likely that it will be available for Ubuntu 18.04, since it is an LTS version and they will only make the jump without checking that everything works perfectly. We remember that Ubuntu 18.10, like Ubuntu 19.04, is a version that will be supported for only 9 months. After that time, Canonical recommends updating to the next available version.
