Linux 5.1-rc4: smaller and all as expected

Linux Kernel

Linux Kernel

In the past week we published on the release of version 5.1-rc3 of the Linux kernel saying that it was bigger than normal, but also that this would be fixed in future versions. It didn't take long to wait: Linux 5.1-rc4 is here and, as Linus Torvalds says, 'Smaller than the rc3, I'm happy to say. Nothing particularly big here, just a small series of things around«.

The father of Linux also says that the third part of everything is drivers, while the rest are a mix between architecture updates, filesystem updates, documentation, networking core ... many topics to mention and invites you to look at the list of corrections that is further down in its circular from the week of March 31 to April 7. In short, they have managed to reduce the size of the kernel by adding a large number of small patches.

Linux 5.1 is expected in a month

The official Linux 5.1 release is scheduled for May 5, unless something very big happens, in which case it would be delayed to the 12th of the same month. Something really serious would have to happen for it to be delayed for another week.

La most up-to-date stable version is Linux 5.0.7 that we can install manually or with Ukuu, a tool that I always mention for its ease of use by showing us with a GUI all the available versions and buttons to make any changes. Of course, even with Ukuu you have to be careful, since sometimes incompatibilities can be generated, especially if we do not eliminate previous installations.

Ubuntu 19.04 will be released on Thursday next week, on April 18, and there is no chance that it will arrive with v5.1 of the Linux Kernel. It will come with a version between v5.0 and 5.0.9, as long as more updates are released between now and the 18th. Personally, I would bet on v5.0.5 approximately. What do you think?
