The launch of the new version of the platform to create a home multimedia center "Myth TV 31", what Allows you to turn a desktop PC into a TV, VCR, music center, album with photos, a station for recording and watching DVD.

The architecture of MythTV relies on backend separation to store or capture video (IPTV, DVB cards, etc.) and the front-end to display and form the interface. The front end can work simultaneously with multiple backends, which can run both on the local system and on external computers.

Functionality is implemented through plugins. Currently, there are two sets of plugins available: official and unofficial.

The range of capabilities covered by the plugins is wide enough, from integrating with various online services and implementing a web interface to manage the system over the network, to tools for working with a webcam and organizing communications from video between PC.

What's new in MythTV 31?

This new version is compatible with Python 3 and with it the developers report that the compatibility with the use of Python 2 is deprecated and will be discontinued in the future. In addition, they report that this new version arrives with significant improvements in capabilities associated with decoding and video playback.

And it is that from this version all video playback requires an OpenGL installation so it works. With this the developers explain that this maximizes performance, quality and consistency of the screen on a wide range of devices and platforms. It also enables MythTV to efficiently display video from the variety of hardware accelerated video decoders that are supported.

Another change mentioned is the support for video decoding acceleration using VAAPI VDPAU, NVDEC, VideoToolBox, Video4Linux2, MMAL and MediaCodec.

While the OpenMax and CrystalHD decoders were removed from the application.

In the case of Raspberry Pi 4, only H264 decoding is supported. Raspberry Pi 2 and 3 have additional decoding for MPEG2 and VC1 with licence. Other devices will generally support H264 and possibly other codecs (eg MPEG2), plus it is mentioned that VAAPI varies considerably depending on the chipset in use.

Finally another of the changes that stands out in this new version of MythTV 31 is that the Channel scan tools were significantly expanded.

Of the other changes mentioned in the ad:
