A new version of Lumina is now available to everyone. The Lumina 1.3 is the latest version of this unknown desktop but at the same time so light that it exists for Gnu / Linux distributions, including Ubuntu. Lumina was born as a desktop for BSD distributions, but within BSD it became so popular that users decided to port it to other operating systems, including Ubuntu.
The new version is available for Ubuntu, but will not be in the official repositories, but we will have to install it through repositories external to the distribution. But before, What does the Lumina 1.3 version bring?
Lumina 1.3 changes the desktop artwork. Lumina is based on the QT libraries, so its developers used KDE's Oxygen. This has been changed recently, incorporating the artwork material-design to the desktop. Being able to choose, but of course, changing the appearance of Lumina.
Another change in this version is in the incorporation of a new tool called Lumina-mediaplayer. This tool will be in charge of playing the multimedia files, but it will also be able to connect with online radios like Pandora. HiDPI screens have also been taken into account and now have better support for users who use these types of resolutions. The file manager has also been improved, adding new functionalities such as the adhesion of a side panel with the view of the directories in tree format.
For install Lumina 1.3 in our Ubuntu we have to compile the packages on our computer and then install those packages. To do this, we first open the terminal and install all the necessary packages for the compilation:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install build-essential git qt5-default qttools5-dev-tools libqt5gui5 qtmultimedia5-dev libqt5multimediawidgets5 libqt5network5 libqt5svg5-dev libqt5x11extras5-dev libxcb-icccm4-dev libxcb-ewmh-dev libxcb-composite0-dev libxcb-damage0-dev libxcb-util0-dev libphonon-dev libxcomposite-dev libxdamage-dev libxrender-dev libxcb-image0-dev libxcb-screensaver0-dev qtdeclarative5-dev fluxbox kde-style-oxygen xscreensaver xbacklight alsa-utils acpi numlockx pavucontrol xterm sysstat
Now, once we have everything ready, what we will do is download the package with the Lumina 1.3 code and get into the code:
git clone https://github.com/trueos/lumina.git cd lumina
After this, we start the compilation followed by the installation of the package created.
qmake make sudo make install
And with this we will have the new version of Lumina 1.3 in our Ubuntu.
It does not compile.
More of the same
it does nothing .. someone could really explain how it installs, and compiles, thank you very much
Well, if this desktop is different, thanks for detailing how well it compiles, I am a newcomer to Linux and I have tried all or almost all the flavors and the truth is I am delighted with this OS that runs even on old PCs.
Thanks for the info and well you take the time to publish it.
I'm going to test this desk right now and then I'll go back to tell you how it went.
Greetings from Mexico City.
