Mozilla says goodbye to Firefox Lite and will change the logic of saving open files in Firefox 91

Mozilla does not stop and continues to make a great series of changes within the Firefox project and it should be noted that the "changes" part does not always refer to positive action, since a few days ago the company decided to end development to Firefox Lite, which is positioned as a lightweight version of Firefox Focus, adapted to run on systems with limited resources and low speed data links.

Updates for Firefox Lite were discontinued on June 30. Users are encouraged to switch to Firefox for Android instead of Firefox Lite.

The reason for termination of the support for Firefox Lite is that, in the current form, Firefox for Android and Firefox Focus fully cover all needs of mobile device users and the need to maintain another edition of Firefox has lost its meaning.

Mozilla will no longer be compatible with the Firefox Lite browser on June 30, 2021. Version 2.6.1 will be the last version compatible with Firefox Lite. You will no longer be able to install or reinstall Firefox Lite from the App Store.

And even that the key difference between Firefox Lite and Firefox Focus is the use of the WebView engine built-in Android instead of Gecko, which reduces the APK package size from 38 to 5,8 MB and also made it possible to use the browser on low-power Smartphones based on the Android Go platform.

Like Firefox Focus, Firefox Lite has a built-in inappropriate content blocker that removes ads, social media widgets, and external JavaScript to track movements. Using a blocker can significantly reduce the size of uploaded data and reduce page load time by an average of 20%.

Functions compatible with Firefox Lite, such as bookmarks of favorite sites, browsing history, tabs to work with several pages at the same time, download manager, quick search for text on the pages, private browsing mode (cookies, history and cached data is not saved).

Advanced features include Turbo mode to speed up loading when removing ads and third-party content (enabled by default), image lock mode, clear cache button to increase free memory, and support for changing the color scheme of the Interface.

The project was developed by Mozilla's development team from Taiwan and was primarily intended for distribution in India, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, China, and developing countries.

Moreover, another of the changes that has been announced is that for Firefox 91 the user will be provided with the ability to automatically save open files after downloading in external applications in a normal "Downloads" directory, instead of the temporary directory.

This change It was derived because Mozilla integrated two download modes into Firefox: one of them the classic to download and save and the other to directly open the file.

So far everything is correct, since any web browser offers these options to the user at the time of downloading, the real problem is that in the second case, the downloaded file was saved in a temporary directory that was deleted once the download was completed. session.

This behavior caused discontent among users that if they needed direct access to the file, they would have to additionally find the temporary directory where the file was saved, or re-download the data if the file had already been automatically deleted.

Now it has been decided to save open files in applications by analogy with normal downloads, which will greatly simplify operations such as sending a document to another user after it was initially opened in an office suite or copying a media file to a file after opening it in a media player. Chrome implements this behavior out of the box.

Finally, if you are interested in knowing more about it, you can check the details in the following link.
