MY 24 essential programs for 2024 (Part Three)

My fundamentals for 2024

Most of us do not take advantage of the full potential of our computer or mobile device. I have a New Year's resolution to do it and that's why continuous with the list of my 24 essential programs for 2024.

When I say that we do not take full advantage of all the potential, I do not mean intensive use of hardware, that is easy to achieve. I'm talking about getting the maximum benefit from your capabilities.

Before continuing, I invite you once again to tell us if there is any program that you consider essential for the coming year, there is the comment form. In fact, I'm upping the ante. Do you dare to tell us what your goals are for this year and how you think this program is going to help you?

My 24 essential programs for 2024

The first three applications that I mentioned in the previous articles had to do with better management of work time to maximize productivity and thus be able to obtain greater income. Now let's focus on the expenses side.

The fourth and fifth application

My main expense is on food.  I live alone and although I am quite good at cooking, I am bothered by the time wasted shopping, preparing food and then washing the utensils used. When I'm short on time, I end up resorting to ready-made meals that are not only expensive, but also unhealthy and tasteless.

The obvious solution is to plan the menu for the week and dedicate one day to shopping, cooking and washing. Then I just have to check in kOrganizer (The first program on this list) which menu corresponds to each day and defrost it.

My dream is, one day, to create a spreadsheet in Calc with the ingredients of the recipes I usually make and the price in the different supermarkets in the neighborhood. A script would determine the ideal combination of recipes to maximize the budget, but for the moment we are going to settle for more basic planning.

Recipes

This application from the GNOME project is so good that I am going to install a distro to be able to use it. Neither the version of the repositories nor the version of the store flat hub They work well for me in Ubuntu Studio.

In principle, Recipes is a large database of recipes collected by the community and sorted by different criteria.. Nothing that we can't find on any other cooking website. But we can also:

  • Add and edit our own recipes including photos.
  • Share them with our friends and the community.
  • Adapt the quantities of ingredients to the number of diners.
  • Hands free mode.
  • Shopping list printing.

skooge

The name of this program is a mix between the surname Scrooge, the most famous miser in world literature (I hope there are no Frenchmen or Molière fans reading this) and the K that identifies most of the KDE project applications.

Before I describe what this program does, allow me an explanation of why I include it.

If you ask for advice on a book on personal finance management, nine out of ten they will recommend The Richest Man in Babylon by George Clason. Clason probably knew about Babylon what I know about quantum physics, but he used fictional characters from that city and its financial problems to explain the financial management techniques he learned in his business career.

Basically what he recommends is to keep a record of income and expenses, reserve 20% to pay debts and the remaining 70% to live on.

Skrooge is a program that allows us to keep track of our income and expenses. Some of its characteristics are:

  • Import and export formats from other personal finance programs.
  • Generation of graphic reports.
  • Management of infinite categories
  • Multi-tab mode.
  • Massive operations update.
  • Operations agenda
  • Payment record.
  • Work with multiple currencies.

Skrooge is available in the KDE-based distribution repositories and in the KDE store. Flatub.
