New and updated applications this week in GNOME

This week in GNOME

The last week in GNOME, which ran from October 20 to 27, has brought us, above all, application updates. But also some new features and changes that are not the software itself, such as the new XDG Desktop Portal page that can be accessed from this link. The new application that has been welcomed this week can be enjoyed especially in Germany.

Above all or exclusively, since it is an application to watch German television channels. It is true that if no territorial restriction is applied it can be used from anywhere, but you will have to know the Teutonic language or you will see it, but you will not understand anything. What you have below is the News list that have arrived during the last seven days.

This week in GNOME

  • The Vala Reference Manual port has recently been merged and is now accessible online here. Plus, it's much prettier.

Vala's Manual

  • After more than 10 years, GLib is now generating the introspection data for its API instead of making it the responsibility of gobject-introspection. This is a requested step to change the documentation generator for GLib API references from gtk-doc to gi-docgen. Work is underway to move libgirepository to GLib, as part of the overall goal of simplifying introspection construction.
  • In an effort to organize GNOME pages a little better, they have created a Website Team. The Websites Team is currently an informal association of people who maintain websites within the GNOME project. In this context, a lot of web page repositories have already been moved to the new GitLab team.
  • Workbench now supports Python.
  • The “The Main Event Loop” chapter of the gtk-rs book has been expanded to include more information on how to handle asynchronous code. Shows how to embed blocking calls in an asynchronous context,
execute asynchronous functions from external boxes, and integrate with tokyo.
  • Televido is the new application that allows you to stream, search and play from German-language public television services. It is based on the MediathekView API and the content comes directly from the different television services, so some may not be available from outside the country.

  • Celeste, a synchronization program for different cloud services, has received several new features, including support for Proton Drive and new icons.
  • Tagger v2023.10.0 now has a Windows version built on WindowsAppSDK and WinUI. Among the rest of the news:
    • Added the option to use relative paths when creating a playlist. This means that Tagger now also allows you to open playlists with relative paths.
    • Added Disk Number, Disk Total, and Release Date fields to additional properties.
    • Added an information dialog for album art.
    • Added an option in Preferences to limit characters in file names to those only supported by Windows.
    • Tagger will now monitor a library of music folders for changes to the disk and prompt the user to reload it if necessary.
    • Tagger will now display album art within a music file's own row if available.
    • Tagger will now remember the format strings previously used for filename-to-tag and tag-to-filename conversions.
    • Fixed an issue where downloaded song lyrics sometimes contained HTML-encoded characters.
    • Fixed an issue where file names containing the < character would not display the music file row.
    • Fixed an issue where the duration displayed for several selected files was incorrect.
    • Improved the UI of the playlist creation dialog.
    • Updated translations.

Tag v2023.10.0

  • GDM Settings 4 has arrived this week:
    • It features a new UI style, support for GNOME 45, and more.
    • Version 4 also brings the name change from “Login Manager Settings” to “GDM Settings”. Internally, GDM Settings has always been known as gdm-settings. Therefore, the name change should make things clearer and more consistent.
    • GDM Settings now also supports GitHub Sponsors
