OBS Studio 26.0 arrives with virtual camera support and more

OBS-Studio

The new version of OBS Studio 26.0 has already been released and is available for download and installation for the general public. In this new version of the software some very interesting changes are added such as support for a virtual camera, buttons to control playback and other changes.

For whom it is they are unaware of this software, they should know that It is for broadcast, composition and video recording. The development goal of OBS Studio is to create a free version of the Open Broadcaster Software application that is not tied to the Windows platform, supports OpenGL, and is extensible through plugins.

The difference is alsos the use of a modular architecture, which means the separation of the interface and the core of the program. Supports transcoding of original streams, video capture during games, and streaming to Twitch, Facebook Gaming, YouTube, DailyMotion, Hitbox, and other services. To ensure high performance, it is possible to use hardware acceleration mechanisms (for example, NVENC and VAAPI).

Main new features of OBS Studio 26.0

In this new version of OBS Studio 26.0 added virtual camera support, which allows OBS output to be used as a webcam for other applications on the computer. Currently, the camera simulation only available for Windows platform and will be added for other operating systems in a future release.

A new Source panel has been proposed (View Menu -> Source Toolbar) with a selection of tools to control the selected source (audio and video capture devices, multimedia files, VLC player, images, windows, text, etc.).

In addition, they were added buttons to control playback, which are effective when the source is selected as media file, VLC or slideshow.

A new noise suppression method, using the RNNoise machine learning system to eliminate extraneous sounds. The new method is significantly more efficient than the previously proposed Speex-based mechanism.

How to install OBS Studio 26 on Ubuntu and derivatives?

For those who are interested in being able to install this new version of OBS on their system, they can do so by following the instructions we share below.

Installing OBS Studio 26 from Flatpak

In general, for almost any current Linux distribution, the installation of this software can be done with the help of Flatpak packages. They should only have the support to install these types of packages.

In a terminal they just have to execute the following command:

flatpak install flathub com.obsproject.Studio

In the event that you already have the application installed by this means, you can update it by executing the following command:

flatpak update com.obsproject.Studio

Installing OBS Studio 26 from Snap

Another general method of installing this application is with the help of Snap packages. In the same way as Flatpak, they must have the support to install these types of packages.

The installation is going to be done from a terminal by typing:

sudo snap install obs-studio

Installation done, now we are going to connect the media:

sudo snap connect obs-studio:camera
sudo snap connect obs-studio:removable-media

Installation from PPA

For those who are Ubuntu users and derivatives, they can install the application by adding a repository to the system.

We add this by typing:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio

sudo apt-get update

And we install the application by running

sudo apt-get install obs-studio
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg
