Quiet news week in GNOME for FOSDEM 2024

This week in GNOME

A few hours ago, Felix published entry number 133 of This Week in GNOME. It has been one of the short ones, partly because this weekend the FOSDEM 2024 will take place. There, the project behind the most used desktop in Linux hopes to meet with colleagues from it and from Flathub, which is the best software store for Linux if there was a general one for all distributions.

Another thing they are preparing and that has had something to say in the tranquility of this last week is one of the GStreamer hackfest. From February 1 to 3 there is one in Brussels, Belgium, but the one in Thessaloniki, Greece, from May 27 to 29 is organized by GNOME. What comes next is a list with news This week.

This Week in GNOME

  • The GTK developers are holding a hackfest in Brussels just before the FOSDEM weekend. A lot of work is being done on rendering, media, data entry and accessibility.
  • The GNOME Project Manual has been officially announced. This new resource provides all the information people need to participate in the GNOME project, including how the project works, how to get accounts and use the project infrastructure, the release cycle, issue management, and much more.
  • Paper Clip v5.0 was released this week. This version brings a couple of quality of life improvements, enhancements and a shiny new feature. This is the list of changes:
    • Paper Clip now allows you to edit encrypted documents, thanks to a new dialog that allows users to open password-protected files.
    • The DublinCore XMP metadata format is now synchronized with its PDF equivalents.
    • Updated translations, including French, Basque, Russian, Italian, Occitan and Spanish.
    • Appdata improvements.

  • The Eeman app is now available on Flathub, using GTK 4 and Libadwaita. This application allows you to track and receive notifications of Salah (prayer) times, and allows you to read the Quran.
  • This week a new version of the Dosage application was launched to keep track of the medications we take in treatments. This version (1.5.1) has many improvements, the most important of which are:
    • It is now possible to edit history entries.
    • New preference to automatically delete history.
    • New row style to select frequency.
    • New row style to select the date.
    • New badge style for confirmed history item.

  • Denaro V2024.2.0 was released this week. This version contains some bug fixes to make your experience more stable:
    • Improved import of QIF files.
    • Fixed a bug where the app would crash when filtering transactions for certain dates (mainly leap years like this year).
    • Updated and added translations.

They remember that GNOME 46 feature freeze is now closing. Starting next Saturday, February 10, changes to the interface, functions or APIs will no longer be allowed without the approval of the launch team. GNOME 46 will arrive in the form of a stable version in March, as always just in time to be included in the next versions of Ubuntu (24.04 Noble Numbat) and Fedora (40).

As for the foundation itself, not everything has been so smooth:

«This week has been very busy for the Foundation staff. I started the week by meeting with our accountants and discussing our books and our budget. Mid-week I traveled to Brussels, where our CEO Holly and I met yesterday with the GNOME Board of Directors and today with our Advisory Council. This weekend is FOSDEM, where I'm looking forward to seeing people stop by our booth as well as at the GNOME Beers on Saturday night. “I have already had many very productive conversations here in Brussels and I am sure there will be many more to come.”

And this has been all this week in GNOME.
