In the next article we are going to take a look at RawTherapee. This is a image processing program without processing. It is written in C ++ and uses a GTK+ front end. It is a cross-platform widget toolkit for creating a graphical user interface.

RawTherapee provides us with a set of operations for image editing specifically aimed at the non-destructive post-production of photographs. It is mainly focused on improving the workflow of a photographer by facilitating the handling of a large number of images. The development of raw images is very easy when we know what we want to obtain and we know the tools that we have at our disposal.

RawTherapee is a FOSS designed for file development RAW of a wide range of digital cameras. Files can also be developed HDR-DNG and non-RAW image formats (JPEG, TIFF and PNG).

The target audience for this program ranges from newcomers to the photographic world who want to broaden their understanding of how digital imaging works to semi-professional photographers. Of course, professionals can also use RawTherapee. In this case they will probably miss some peripheral functions such as Digital Asset Management, printing, charging, etc. RawTherapee is not intended to be an all-inclusive program.

This application is released under the GNU General Public License Version 3. It was originally written by Gábor Horváth of Budapest. Subsequently, the development was taken over in 2010 by a team of people from all over the world. Instead of being a graphics editor like Photoshop, GIMP, or a digital asset management program like digiKam, is specifically aimed at post-production of raw photos. And it does it very well, RawTherapee is one of the most powerful raw processing programs available today.

General characteristics of Rawtherapee

This application provides us with a batch queue to make adjustments to images as quickly as possible. The edition that we can carry out of the images is a non-destructive edition.

The program will allow us advanced color management from white balance to HSV (Hue-Saturation-Value) curves, color toning and color management. We will also have at our disposal improved tonality and exposure tools. Among them we can find laboratory tones and curves, light and shadow tools, tone mapping (HDR effect), etc.

Multiple methods of noise reduction: luminance, chrominance, boost for noise reduction. We will also have at our disposal several tools to improve details such as the unsharp mask and contrast by levels of detail.

Copy / paste the edit parameters from one file to many others. It is also possible to copy and / or partially paste. We will also have basic tools at our disposal immediately in our hands.
