RazorQT, a lightweight desktop for your Ubuntu

Razor-QT Desk

In the next tutorial I will explain how to make Ubuntu 12.04 lighter, installing one of the most gnome-like desktops classic but that consumes much less resources.

The desktop in question is Razor-QT, and it's a very valid way to reduce resource consumption of Ubuntu 12.04.

The desktop has its own configuration application, you have the possibility to add plugins and widgets and it is very similar to classic gnome, with the great difference that we have the applications menu floating, so that it appears we will only have to right-click with the mouse anywhere on our desktop.

Razor-QT Configuration App

To install it on Ubuntu 12.04, the first thing we have to do is add the repositories of Razor-QT:

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa: razor-qt / ppa
How to install Razor-QT

We update the list of packages with the order:

  • sudo apt-get update
Updating the package list

And finally we install the application with the following command line:

  • sudo apt-get install razorqt
How to install Razor-QT

Now to run the application, we will only have to log out current, and open a new one by selecting the desktop Razor-QT from the login options.

Once open, we can immediately see your similarity with classic gnome, but we can also check its extreme lightness, since in just a couple of seconds we will have our desktop active and ready to go, something that for example with gnome-shell or Unity does not happen, since it takes a few more seconds to start and, If we have a somewhat resource-tight computer, we can see how everything slows down and it can be a real ordeal to take any action.

This desk for its simplicity and lightness it is ideal for somewhat old computers or with few resources.

It would be great if I could remake the distro, adding this desktop and the program that adds the Wi-Fi drivers for windows owners. In portable ebook helmet the wifi and I put an external mini belquin, with linux distros there is no way to make it work.
