Shotwell 0.32.0 arrives with support improvements, recognition and more

Shotwell

Shotwell is an image viewer and organizer for the GNOME desktop.

After four and a half years of development, the release of the first version of a new stable branch of Shotwell 0.32.0, version that comes with great compatibility improvements, features and more.

For those who don't know about Shotwell, they should know that this is a photo collection management software which provides convenient cataloging and browsing through the collection, supports grouping by time and tags, provides tools for importing and converting new photos, supports performing typical image processing operations, etc.

Main news of Shotwell 0.32.0

In this new version of Shotwell 0.32.0 that is presented, it stands out that support for JPEG XL, WEBP and AVIF image formats (AV1 Image Format), as well as HEIF (HEVC), AVIF, MXF and CR3 (Canon raw format) file formats.

Another change that stands out is that by default, face recognition in the photos and the configuration of Tags to fit faces are enabled. Tags like these can be used to group, sort, and find people in other photos.

The interface for viewing photos and the tools for processing them are adapted to work on screens with a high pixel density (HiDPI).

In addition to that, Shotwell 0.32.0 also highlights the improved support for Flickr, Google Photos and Piwigo, as well as that the loading of photos in Google Photos in batch mode was improved. Removed Facebook post code (was inoperable).

On the other hand, we can find in Shotwell 0.32.0 that provides the ability to specify hierarchical labels which consist of several levels (eg "group/tag"), plus the libportal library is used to send photos and set wallpapers from sandboxes (eg when installing a flatpak package).

Improved zoom control and touchpad scrolling.

I have installed it on updated Manjaro KDE and it is very slow. The previous version (I think I had 0.30) was appreciably faster for me. When I comment that it is slow, it is a matter of taking seconds to do anything. Even when I have exported images to a directory, it sits for minutes (I have to interrupt because it doesn't seem to do anything) at 100% apparently doing nothing. That could be happening? Are there any known bugs already detected in this version?
