SimpleNote 1.0.8, install it as .deb or snap on Ubuntu

Simple Note 1.0.8

In this article we will see how to install Simplenote 1.0.8. A colleague spoke about him a year ago (you can see his article in the following link), but we already have a new update in hand. Next we will see how to install this application in Ubuntu using the .deb package or for those who prefer the snap package.

For those who do not know what SimpleNote is, clarify what it is an open source alternative to EverNote. It's free, lightweight, and available for Linux, Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS. SimpleNote is developed by Automattic. This is the same company that is behind the WordPress blogging platform.

The operation of Simplenote 1.0.8 is very straightforward and simple. In addition to his easy to use interface, this program is going to offer us some very interesting features such as the possibility of making our notes public. We can also add labels to them, it will give us the possibility to create collaborative notes and even to put a password to the note to restrict its use by other users who do not want them to snoop on them.

Some of the features that this program offers us are the possibility of automatic synchronization between our devices. We will be able to return our notes to previous versions. As I have already said, it gives us the possibility to share the notes with other people to see and edit them together. It will also give us the option to create a public URL for our notes. The possibility of organizing the notes with labels will give us the option of filtering. This will be more efficient to find the one we are looking for faster.

In this new version, improvements have been made in the search of our notes, the highlighted button has been added and the search button has been added. Now we can export the notes from the files menu. Say that in general improved performance and reliability of the application.

Install SimpleNote 1.0.8 .deb file

Simplenote official website

To install this application in our Ubuntu system we will only have to go to Official website from SimpleNote and download the deb package. On the website we will find different installers for different platforms. In case you want this program on another Linux system, there is also a generic binary (.tar.gz) for other distributions.

If you prefer to use the terminal for installation, you will only have to use the following command to download the SimpleNote .deb package.

wget https://github.com/Automattic/simplenote-electron/releases/download/v1.0.8/simplenote-1.0.8.deb

Once downloaded, we will install it with dpkg.

sudo dpkg -i simplenote-1.0.8.deb

When the installation is finished, we can start it from the Unity Dash or the application launcher that we want. If when you look for the application the icon does not appear, try log out and log in again so that the icon appears and you can start the program.

Install SimpleNote 1.0.8 snap package

As almost always, in the Gnu / Linux world, we still have another way to install the program. In any distribution compatible with Snap we can install this software. Snap applications allow software manufacturers to quickly and conveniently package and distribute their software. For Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or 16.04 LTS or other distributions you can use the following command in the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T):

sudo snap install simplenote

If your operating system in Ubuntu 16.10 or 17.04 you can install this application from Ubuntu Software.

When you load the program, at the first start, you will need to register a new account to be able to use it. It's easy and fast, so you won't waste a lot of time on it. When you are already inside the program, it will give us the option to change the default white theme to a dark theme and other configuration options. This is already a matter of everyone's taste.

Uninstall Simplenote 1.0.8

To uninstall the .deb package of this program, we will only have to open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and write in it:

sudo apt remove simplenote

If what you have used for the installation has been the snap. Uninstalling Simplenote is just as easy. What you will have to use in the terminal is the following command:

sudo snap remove simplenote

It is a good program and it complies perfectly, but I prefer standard notes, it is even better and open source:

It looks good, although I miss the ability to share notes with another user. 😉
    Thanks for the note.
