Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS [Video]

Ubuntu 16.04 on a Surface Pro 4

When Canonical and BQ partnered to launch the first tablet with Ubuntu, I have to confess that what initially gave me a certain illusion turned to disappointment when I found out how limited that tablet was. I understand that Canonical does not want us to "screw up" the system on a new device, but using Ubuntu without being able to install everything we want from its repositories seems silly to me. This is something that we can do in the Surface Pro 4, the latest hybrid from Microsoft.

Microsoft's Surface is very interesting devices that unite the best of tablets with the best of laptops. On the one hand, we have a touch screen, and on the other we have a device capable of running operating systems like macOS (if I'm not mistaken; it was possible in previous versions) or Ubuntu 16.04. In my opinion, installing either of the two operating systems not developed by Microsoft will be solving many of the worst problems of this hybrid.

The Surface Pro 4 is compatible with Ubuntu

The above video was recorded by John Cuppi, who managed to install the latest LTS version of Ubuntu on the latest Microsoft Surface device. In the video, Cuppi talks about what works and what does not work correctly, like that initially we cannot use the touchpad or keyboard of the Surface. This is probably easy to fix, even though he used an external keyboard and mouse.

After installing the operating system, Cuppi installed the Peter Hunt's third-party Ubuntu kernel for devices like the Surface Pro 4, that is, for Microsoft Surface devices. Once installed, rebooted, and kernel enabled, most things seem to work quite well, including touchscreen and stylus support.

As Also works, we remember that after installing the modified kernel, it is the video playback, sound, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and SD card reader. Although with all the above I would already be satisfied, we also have to say that the volume buttons -something not very serious if we take into account that we can control the volume from the sound icon on the top bar, the webcam and the sleep function they do not work, nor can you set the pressure of the stylus.

Personally, I believe and hope that most of the bugs Cuppi has encountered will be fixed in the future. The Surface Pro 4 can be a great option for using Ubuntu on a touchscreen tablet, as long as we don't mind paying for the 799-2.299 € which asks us Microsoft for her. As you see it?

If I have seen them in aurrera winery with ubuntu and that's how dell is the one that sells more computers with ubuntu, anyway dell is more about selling equipment from its website than in stores, the ones we see regularly are basic but anyone can buy from your website and even assemble it to your liking in various models
