The code name for Ubuntu 19.04 will be Ubuntu 19.04 "Disco Dingo"

ubuntu_story

Well as most of you know, Ubuntu developers follow a work schedule of which we recently received what is its most current version, which is the Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic Cuttlefish version.

And having already spent a few days after this important launch by Canonical, the development cycle of the next release has now started, which will be Ubuntu 19.04, which will be released in the spring of 2019.

The next version of Ubuntu already has a name

The tradition of putting strange names in Ubuntu versions is quite well known by Canonical to their Ubuntu releases and it is a tradition that should be kept up.

The codename or code for each version of Ubuntu is traditionally composed of an adjective (a descriptive word) and an animal, both beginning with the same letter.

Here there is a full history of the animal-themed Ubuntu release name:

  • Warty Warthog (4.10)
  • Hoary Hedgehog (5.04)
  • Breezy Badger (5.10)
  • Dapper Drake (6.06 LTS)
  • Edgy Eft (6.10)
  • Feisty Fawn (7.04)
  • Gutsy Gibbon (7.10)
  • Hardy Heron (8.04 LTS)
  • Intrepid Ibex (8.10)
  • Jaunty Jackalope (9.04)
  • Karmic Koala (9.10)
  • Lucid Lync (10.04 LTS)
  • Maverick Meerkat (10.10)
  • Natty Narwhal (11.04)
  • Oneiric Ocelot (11.10)
  • Precise Pangolin (12.04 LTS)
  • Quantum Quetzal (12.10)
  • Rare Ringtail (13.04)
  • Saucy Salamander (13.10)
  • Trusty Tahr (14.04 LTS)
  • Utopic Unicorn (14.10)
  • Vivid Vervet (15.04)
  • Willy Werewolf (15.10
  • Xenial Xerus (16.04 LTS)
  • Yakkery Yak (16.10)
  • Zesty Zapus (17.04)
  • Artful Aardvark (17.10)
  • Bionic Beaver (18.04 LTS)
  • Cosmic Cuttlefish (18.10)

Developer Mark Shuttleworth, who is responsible for the distribution of Canonical, has not yet spoken on his blog on the start of the new Ubuntu development cycles.

It is he who will officially reveal the official code name of Ubuntu version 19.04.

However, Launchpad introduced another strange name: Disco Dingo. Hence, Disco Dingo may be the name of Ubuntu 19.04.

Despite the Canonical CEO, Mark Shuttleworth, is no longer naming new versions of Ubuntu, the development team already had the code name of the next Ubuntu 19.04 version of the system and published a draft of the release schedule.

About the code name

Dingo is a type of wild dog native to Australia and known for its sand coat. Dingoes hunt alone or in packs, these being quite cooperative.

They have characteristics of both wolves and modern dogs, and its appearance is thought to be similar to that of the predecessor of today's dogs.

Presumably its origin is Asian; it is believed to have settled on the Australian continent about 3 years ago following human settlements in Asia.

Inspired by the nature of the Dingo (who generally sulks when humans are around), the word evolved into informal Australian slang meaning "coward," for example, "he missed the date."

Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo is only the second Ubuntu release to use the letter 'D', as the first was Ubuntu 6.06 'Dapper Drake', released in 2006.

About Ubuntu 19.04 «Disco Dingo»

Ubuntu Disco Dingo

Ubuntu 19.04 "Disco Dingo" will be released on April 18, 2019 (if the entire development cycle follows your schedule to the letter).

The development cycle officially started on October 25, 2018, with the load of the tool chain. Three "Ubuntu Testing Weeks" are scheduled for January 3, January 31, and February 28, 2019.

Ubuntu 19.04 continues the tradition of removing Alpha milestones and sticking to a single Beta release throughout the development cycle.

We don't know much about what features Ubuntu 19.04 will contain. Although this is a particularly good name, it fits in with Ubuntu's naming guidelines, which combine an adjective and a pet name, both of which start with the same letter.

But one thing we could be sure of is that you will likely be using components from the GNOME 3.32 desktop environment and a variety of other packages.

I wonder what the connection is between Disco and Dingo, since I don't think there are clubs for Dingo or Dingo that listen to Disco music.
