The development version of Wine 5.3 gets to fix some bugs with games and a few more things

wine

Seriously that the Wine boys they do not stop surprising me and it is that they have maintained their accelerated pace of work already for a few years (also taking into account the support they receive from Valve), since from the 1.x and 2.x branch that development seemed stagnant, the jump to the 3.x and 4.x branches were the boom and they showed that Wine was not forgotten.

And not to mention the new 5.x branch which was only announced its work at the end of the year and that the stable version was released just a few weeks ago. But returning to the purpose of the article I am pleased to share with you the Announcement of the release of the new development version of Wine 5.3 which closes 29 error reports that were present in the previous version (5.2) and in addition to that 350 changes have been made.

For those who are still unaware of the Wine project you should know that this is a layer of the open source implementation of the Win32 API capable of running a Windows compatibility layer on Linux, MacOS, and BSD. Wine is an excellent completely free alternative to the Windows API for GNU / Linux systems and you can also optionally use native Windows DLLs, if available.

Please note that while some applications and games work fine with Wine on a Linux distribution, others may have bugs.

Furthermore, Wine offers a development kit as well as a Windows program loader, so developers can easily modify many Windows programs that run under x86 Unix, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

Wine has two versions which is the stable version and the development version. The stable version is the result of work and bug fixes in the development version.

The development version is usually in theory the most important as this version is released in order to detect all those errors and be able to correct or apply patches.

What's new in the development version of Wine 5.3?

As such this new development version arrives to apply the bug fixes detected and also the patches transferred from valve's “Proton” project.

Of the highlightsAre the closed bug reports related to game and app work, of which are mentioned: IKEA Home Planner 2010, Lotus Approach, Neocron, Age of empires III Steam, Far Cry 2, ADExplorer, Proteus, Danganronpa V3, Resident Evil 2 1-Shot Demo, Logos Bible, Automobilista, Warhammer Online , Detroit: Become Human, Lotus Organizer 97, Arma Cold War Assault, AnyDesk, QQMusicAgent, Gothic II Night of the Raven, and Far Cry 5.

On the other hand, of the corrections made, improved handling of shell folders is highlighted (These basically serve for those applications or games that use special directories to place certain types of content, for example, data, images, etc.).

It is also mentioned that Winecfg received improvements, of which now adds the new standard folders "Downloads" and "Templates".

Of the other fixes that stand out:

  • Fixed issue with resetting Shell folders after every wine update.
  • Work continued to ensure that ucrtbase can be used as a C runtime.
  • Added full support for normalizing Unicode strings.

How to install the development version of Wine 5.3 on Ubuntu and derivatives?

If you are interested in being able to test this new development version of Wine on your distro, you can do so by following the instructions we share below.

The first step will be to enable the 32-bit architecture, that even if our system is 64 bits, performing this step saves us many problems that usually occur, for this we write on the terminal:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Now we must import the keys and add them to the system with this command:

wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/Release.key
sudo apt-key add Release.key

Done this now we are going to add the following repository to the system, for this we write in the terminal:

sudo apt-add-repository https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get --download-only install winehq-devel
sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel
sudo apt-get --download-only dist-upgrade
