The Ubuntu repositories already have the latest version of the Intel driver

Meltdown and Specter Lotypes

Ubuntu repositories have been at the center of Ubuntu controversy in recent months. After the serious error that appeared as a result of the Ubuntu 17.10 kernel, the Specter and Meltdown error appeared. A bug that made Ubuntu have to remove the latest versions of Intel's microcode in order to give stability and security to the distribution.

Time passed, Intel has managed to create a secure driver or microcode for Ubuntu and that is why Ubuntu decided to work with it to offer a secure update for all Ubuntu user platforms. Until now, the solution was only on 64-bit platforms. Days after the release of that update, we can already say that the security update is available for all Ubuntu architectures, especially for the 32-bit platform, a platform that many users still use (despite the fact that many Ubuntu developers do not believe it) and that at the moment was without protection against these security bugs that allowed the hijacking of the machine through the kernel.

This update will appear throughout the next few hours for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Ubuntu 17.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. And depending on the type of internet connection we have and the operation of the Ubuntu servers. However, if we have a 64-bit distribution, this update will have arrived days ago. In any case, you can always try to speed up the process by opening a terminal and typing the following:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the package is really available, it will appear with these commands and will ask us if we want to install it or not. In this case we will say yes since the package to install is not just any program but is a so-called security patch which will improve the security of the distribution.

I went from a 16.04 distribution (which already had occasional problems with the intel graphics driver) to 18.04 and now this got worse to the point that I usually work applying nomoset to the grub to turn on.
