Tor or how to anonymously surf the Web

La security in a web browser and on a system is very importantEven more so when, on many occasions, forced by the economic situation, we have to dedicate ourselves to doing somewhat illicit things. For all this and for more things, such as being able to visit web pages anonymously or being able to visit websites from other countries without restrictions, it is advisable to use Tor in our system.

What is Tor?

Tor It is a system that was born as need of the US Navy, its purpose was to give anonymity and security to the connections that La Marina had, of course, is a need that until recently was not had. As a result of these investigations, Tor, an application that "camouflages" you by The net so you can browse anonymously.

This security system is not only valid for web browsing but for any communication of our system with the outside.

How to install Tor on our computer?

Tor It is already very consolidated and we can find it in the official Ubuntu repositories. So we can install it from the Ubuntu Software Center or from the terminal. Tor It does not have a graphical interface so we will need to install the application «vidalia" to configure it graphically.

On the official Tor website we also find a browser adapted to this project. It does not stop being a version of Mozilla Firefox that has the Tor configuration added, such a browser is not found in the official ubuntu repositories but it can be downloaded from the Tor project website. To install it we only have to download the package and open a terminal by going to the folder where we download the package, now we write:

tar-xvzf tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-2.3.25-12-dev- LONG . tar.gz

cd tor-browser_ LONG

. / Start-tor-browser

After this it will be launched a script that will open Firefox with the correct settings.

Many of you will think that why they want anonymity in these times or that surely that application will not work with you. Well, recently the guys from Pirate Ebay, one of the torrent file sites, on the occasion of its anniversary, has released a compilation of Mozilla Firefox with many add-ons focused on security and anonymity, including Tor.

To finish, tell you that if this post seemed brief to you, on the project site you will find more exhaustive information and that we will soon talk about how to configure this application to have a secure system, for the moment I leave you to play with it.
