Ubuntu 17.04 will be called Zesty Zapus (almost right!)

Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zappus

Wow, that's a shame. A few hours ago, my colleague Joaquín told me about the possibility of creating a post talking about what the next version of Ubuntu could be called. Making the mistake of starting to write without thinking twice, I have not realized that for a couple of hours it has already been known that Ubuntu 17.04 will be called Zesty Zappus, so I had to edit a post that had already finished 100% and that I have not hit the publish button to make sure that the name had not been revealed yet (I was wrong). From here, you have a post that contains part of the text that I had already written and part adding the new information.

Canonical has therefore continued with its usual roadmap and Mark Shutthelworth has already has unveiled the name of the next version of Ubuntu. There have been no surprises, so the numbering will be what we all expected and in April 2017 it will arrive Ubuntu 17.04, the 26th version of the operating system developed by Canonical. What is not at all clear is what name will accompany the numbering of the next version of Ubuntu.

Zasty Zeppus

Since Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake, version that arrived in June 2006, all versions of Canonical's operating system have had by name the name of an animal that begins with a letter of the alphabet higher than that of the name used in the previous version. Before, three other versions arrived (4.10 Warty Warthog, 5.04 Hoary Hedgehog and 5.10 Breezy Badger), but these did not respect the rule of the alphabet. What they did respect is that both the animal's name and its adjective began with the same letter.

Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus is coming April 2017

So far, the names of all Ubuntu versions have been as follows:

  • Ubuntu 4.10: Warty Warthog.
  • Ubuntu 5.04: Hourly Hedgehog.
  • Ubuntu 5.10: Breezy Badger.
  • Ubuntu 6.06 LTS: Dapper Drake.
  • Ubuntu 6.10: Edgy Efft.
  • Ubuntu 7.04: Fairy Fawn.
  • Ubuntu 7.10. Gutsy Gibbon.
  • Ubuntu 8.04 LTS: Hardy Heron.
  • Ubuntu 8.10. Intrepid Ibex.
  • Ubuntu 9.04: Jaunty Jackalope.
  • Ubuntu 9.10: Karmic Koala.
  • Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: Lucid Lynx.
  • Ubuntu 10.10: Maverick Meerkat.
  • Ubuntu 11.04: Natty Narwhal.
  • Ubuntu 11.10: Oneiric Ocelot.
  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS: Specify Pangolin.
  • Ubuntu 12.10: Quantum Quetzal.
  • Ubuntu 13.04: Rare Ringtail.
  • Ubuntu 13.10: Saucy Salamander.
  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: TrustyTahr.
  • Ubuntu 14.10: Utopian Unicorn.
  • Ubuntu 15.04: Vivid Velvet.
  • Ubuntu 15.10: Wily Werewolf.
  • Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Xenial Xerus.
  • Ubuntu 16.10: Yakket and Yak.
  • Ubuntu 17.04: Zesty Zebu? No, Zesty Zepus

My bet, which was the one I had written, was Zesty Zebu, which means "spicy zebu." It was a bet like any other that said that it would not be totally ruled out until the moment in which Shuttleworth said otherwise, something that has already happened (although not 100%).

With this explained, we already knew that Zesty means hot spicy, a name he had come up with by searching the internet for "funny words that start with Z" in English. I had found it funny, both for its meaning and seen from an Ubuntu point of view. The zapus it is a jumping mouse of which you have an image heading this post.

Now that the name is officially known, I can only wait 6 months to see if I get the name of Ubuntu 17.10 right.
