Ubuntu 18.10, Ubuntu 18.04, and Ubuntu 16.04 also receive kernel updates

New kernel versions for Ubuntu 18.10, 18.04, 16.04 and 14.04

Last Thursday at the last minute we published an article in which we talked about the launch of a kernel update for Ubuntu 19.04 Disco Dingo. The new version was (is) Linux 5.0.0-20.21 and on the same day we said they were likely to be released as well new kernel versions for Ubuntu 18.10, Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 16.04, that is, all supported versions. At that time it was not impossible for us to investigate further, but now we know that Canonical has released new versions of the kernel for Cosmic Cuttlefish, Bionic Beaver, Xenial Xerus and even Trusty Tahr in its ESM version.

Just like we explain Thursday, the new version (s) fixes up to three security flaws, which are the 1831638, CVE-2019-11479 y CVE-2019-11478. What we did not know, and have explained here, is that the previous update introduced a regression that interfered with certain apps with values SO_SNDBUF very low. Basically, in part, they "broke something" trying to repair another "something," so this Thursday they released another update to fix what had stopped working properly.

Ubuntu 18.10 already has Linux 4.18.0-25.26 available

The new kernel versions are:

  • Linux 5.0.0-20.21 for Ubuntu 19.04.
  • Linux 4.18.0-25.26 for Ubuntu 18.10.
  • Linux 4.15.0-54.58 for Ubuntu 18.04.
  • Linux 4.15.0-54.58 ~ 16.04.1 for Ubuntu 16.04.
  • Linux 4.4.0-154.181 ~ 14.04.1 has also been released for Ubuntu 14.04 ESM, a version that is enjoying Extended Service Maintenance.

Canonical encourages all users with affected operating systems to update as soon as possible. In order for our computer to be fully protected by the new patches, it will be necessary to restart. With this explained, we have to speak once more about LivePatch, an option whose arrival was announced for Ubuntu 19.04 but that in the end was not produced, although the icon was included in the applications menu. Live Patch will allow us to update the kernel of our operating system without the need to restart.
