There were doubts about when it would arrive, but they have already been cleared. Canonical has launched Ubuntu 20.04.2, but this is not a new version of the operating system you develop and its official flavors, but new ISO images that include updated packages and bug fixes, such as the latest security patches that you have had time to introduce. 20.04.2 comes six months after the first point update, which is launched in August 2020, and it was a week late.
Regarding the kernel used, Ubuntu 20.04.2 has switched to using Linux 5.8, the same one that Groovy Gorilla uses, but a more updated version than the one released last summer that includes patches that have been applied over the months. Focal Fossa will remain at 5.8 until they release the third point update, at which point it will probably switch to Linux 5.11 as it is the kernel that Hirsute Hippo will use and 20.04.3 will arrive on August 25th.
Ubuntu 20.04.2 will be followed by at least three more updates
Ubuntu is available at 8 official flavors, which are Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu Kylin. The new ISOs have all been released at the same time, but there are also other flavors that want to become part of the family and have been more early risers. Thus, the first to launch the new image was Ubuntu Unity Remix, who did at noon on February 4. Information on this release is available at this link. Other flavors that want to become official are UbuntuDDE y Ubuntu Cinnamon. Ubuntu Unity developers are also working on Free Web, but this operating system is very different and its goal is to rival Chrome OS.
Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fosa is the latest LTS version of Canonical's system and will be supported until April 2025. Until then, Canonical will release at least three more dot updates.
