Right after the release of a new version of Ubuntu, Canonical gets to work on the next one. They may take a week, but soon they release what is known as the Daily Build, which are daily images that include all the changes that have been introduced during the previous day. Basically, the first thing they launch is an older version with minimal changes on which they will introduce more, but everything changes over time. Now, 5 months after the release of Eoan Ermine, Canonical launched Ubuntu 20.04 Beta.
As you know, Ubuntu is currently available in 8 flavors: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu Kylin. All are available today in beta form from Focal Fossa. Therefore and as always, many of the new functions will have to do with the graphical environment of each flavor, including Kubuntu Plasma 5.18 and Ubuntu GNOME 3.36.
Ubuntu 20.04 will land on April 23
Among the general news that will come to the Ubuntu brand, we have:
- Sopotado for 5 years, until 2025.
- Linux 5.4. Although Linux 5.6 is already available, Canonical uses LTS kernels in LTS versions, so it has stuck to that version. Some important functions of later versions of the kernel will be implemented by Canonical.
- Enhanced ZFS support. This will allow us, for example, to create control points, but Linus Torvalds does not recommend its use.
- wire guard. This is one of the features Canonical will add on its own. They will bring it from Linux 5.6.
- Drop support for Python 2.
Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa and his mascot Felicity will officially arrive next April 23. The COVID-19 crisis has not affected Canonical's work, so they will meet this and all of their project deadlines. When the time comes we will publish articles about all the releases, including the most outstanding news of each of the official flavors.
